Knocking Sound From Underbody Over Bumps at Low Speed
The past few weeks I've been hearing a knocking sound when leaving my driveway at low speeds (pot holes everywhere). I drive 40 minutes of highway to work everyday and I don't hear it at all on the highway, even over bumps and dips in the road.
At first I thought I heard it coming from the front driver's side wheel. I had just adjusted my coil overs for winter ride height. It sounded like the spring wasn't seated properly or was loose in the seats from the wrong pre load or something. So I took a look at it, everything was tight and buttoned up correctly.
Recently we got some snow and today I noticed that from a dead stop, if I hit the gas and let the wheels spin in the snow, the sound amplifies a lot louder than before. But now it sounds like its coming from the center of underneath the car. It sounded like a chattering noise.
I'm at a loss. I thought maybe it was a loose underbody cover or a busted exhaust hanger or something. Can't seem to figure out why I don't hear it on the highway but just on low speed pot holes and spinning out in the snow.
Any ideas? Going to try and get it looked at this weekend.

I have the same issue. It's my exhaust rattling on SOMETHING but everytime i put it on jack stands I can't replicate it. Sitting in the driveway I can replicate it by shutting my door or pushing on my exhaust tips... As soon as its up on jacks or ramps... No sound. So aggravating! Lol

I think I've heard this knocking sound too. I havent noticed it recently but I've definitely heard some odd knocking sound in the past. Im an AWD lowered 25 inches ground to fender.
On another note, how is your CV boot at your height? I'm thinking about lowering it a little more to 24.5 inches but am worried about the CV boot...

Check the end links and bushings on the control arms. I had the same rattle on another car and found out that the bushings were bad. I would hear a rattle over small bumps and not so much on larger bumps. It was definitely a metal to metal kind of rattle. I changed it and it was gone. Hope this helps. My IS isn't making a rattling noise but if it does, I hope we find a solution for it. Please keep us posted after you figure out the culprit.

Something similar happened to me a month back.. After carefully inspecting the brakes/suspension, upon putting my wheel back, I heard the noise inside my tire. My TPMS fell apart inside the wheel! This explained the reason why I would hear it on slow speeds, but not at high (because it was riding the inside tire wall!)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Hopefully I'll get it into my regular mechanic in the next two weeks and have him diagnose it. At least I'll have some ideas for him now. He is going to install my SPC Ball Joints and Megan Rear Arms so I'll have him check it out and report back.
On another note I've heard someone said his similar noise was due to bad transmission mounts. Infinite possibilities.
