carbon buildup warranty information
Good afternoon,
I received a letter in the mail officially stating that lexus will replace/redo engines that have specific problems detailed in the notice, due to carbon buildup. I was wondering:
If I experience this issue, and I decide to take my car in to get the engine repaired, will this basically make my engine like new. i.e. will they replace most of the parts with brand new parts, or just the pistons?
My is250 is pushing 100k with not too many problems. I was just wondering exactly what is involved in this engine service? If it's basically replacing my engine with all new parts, thats one hell of a way to keep customers satisfied. way to go lexus!

Well, how I've read it is that Lexus will replace the pistons/rings/clean out the combustion chambers/clean off the valves to make this all right. The problem here is that any motor with a good amount of miles on it (yours for instance at 100k) will have some amount of wear on the cylinder bores, making the clearances between the cylinder wall and the pistons > factory spec. The ONLY way to fix this would be a new short block OR the bores to be machined to match new oversized pistons with correct piston-to-wall clearances. Both of which I HIGHLY doubt Lexus will be going to the length of doing. The fix will help of course, but it will cause excessive oil usage in the long run.
It is good that Lexus is standing up and accepting fault for this issue, but they will be doing the least possible to get away with fixing the problem.

that makes sense. i would think that the bore diameter changing due to excessive wear (high mileage) might be a cause of this buildup, or maybe the other way around. im not sure, but i can see now how it wouldnt make it entirely brand new. thanks for the input gville
