Default car revs up when braking

hey guys, my 08 is250 revs up when braking down hill. lets say im at 1.5 RPM and rolling down a hill doesnt even have to be a steep hill, it revs up to about 2.5 RPM. just wondering if this is normal since im going in to see my SA on tuesday for a different problem. last time i went my SA said its normal its kind of like a stick shift down shifting, but this is an auto not manual. any ideas please help!

also a separate situation, does anyone know if there are software updates to our bluetooth systems? i get lots of scratchy noises when calling out with my iphone 4s. my SA also said that bluetooth is just a transfer of data from my phone to the car and if my phone has problems then it would be only the phone i need to change, but its practically new and just updated to the IOS6...

also any updates the voice regonition? the system never hears my commands correctly.

sorry if im going on but i posted my questions on the bluetooth section and no one answered...

TIA

It's most likely downshift that you notice that it appears to rev up. Have the multi-display display in gear position and you'll have your confirmation.

I seen it rev up as it switches from gear 6 and jumps to gear 4 under braking depending on the hill from reading the display since I always keep it on gear position.

Switch the display view to see the gears on the cluster. You'll see its simply downshifting to engine brake the car.

It's called Artificial Intelligence shift patterning. (don't blame me for the stupid name). it uses all sorts of fun sensors to determine that you are going downhill and when you brake it will downshift to help the braking system. it can be strangely inconsistent though. it will usually do it every time in a particular spot, but if you go to another similar downhill it won't downshift for some reason. it really can have a mind of it's own.....but it's not a bad thing.

It's a feature in all Toyota cars I believe, I know my Scion tC had it and it sucked most of the time, it's like diagtime described, the car senses that you're going down hill and trying to break and feels that it is not slowing down enough for you so it helps out by downshifting the car.

No way of turning it off that I know of either, I noticed if your in ECT mode as well that it's worse, it shifts a lot harder.

Putting the car in S mode turns off AI-SHIFT.

No idea if that changes the specific braking behavior described though as I've never been bothered by it to check.

I was going to post something similar to this. Went to the mountains the other day here in North Carolina and those down hills are pretty steep. My car seemed like it did not know how to down shift or shift gear back up and when it did, the shift was really hard. I was very annoyed about that so I just shift to S mode and shifted myself until the roads evened out again.

Its downshifting does that a lot downhill more than uphill

While S mode does turn off AI-Shift, it does not let you shift the car yourself... the car is, always, a fully automatic transmission. The only thing S mode ever lets you do is limit the maximum gear the automatic transmission can use.... in some circumstances this can "seem" like you are shifting the car, but you aren't, and can't, the car is always an auto.

If you want any direct control over shifts you'd need to trade up to the IS-F and use M mode.
