IS250 Carbon Build up CSP
#138
I just got the CSP letter today for my 2007 IS 250 AWD. I've only had the rough idle issue once or twice since picking up the Lexus back in March 31 of this year from Carmax (with 69K+ miles on it).
Thinking about bringing it in over the weekend to Palm Beach Lexus; should I wait it out till the rough idle reappears or just bring it in and let them replicate the rough idle issue?

Vibrations really isn't a good word for this condition. the car would shake and tremble. it would also be very very intermittent. you would only feel it every once in a while and it usually stops after 3-5 seconds.

I haven't got the letter yet. But my car feels like it about to died out and my engine is misfiring at he stop light a lot of times . Vibration is very noticeable when it stopped. So today I brought my car to the dealer to talk to SA. He said they have to diagnose the car if I m having the issue. SA said it will cost me about $170 TO.DIAGNOSED. N if it showing some code saying I have carbon built up/ misfiring they will fix it with no charge. So I m taking my car to local macanic shop to see if I m having these codes or not. But I m thinking if I take it to the dealer n they say " nohing wrong with your car". Than I just lose $170. My car is 06 with 78k.
some things you should know.
1. it's very interesting they are asking for diag time. you must not have another dealership near you. most dealerships would be more than happy to check out a car for free that will likely need a $7000 warranty repair. you can haggle with your dealership or just call another one and make sure they're willing to take your potentially very profitable business.
2. codes are not needed. not at all. the bottom line is, unless your check engine light actually came on, it's not likely that any codes will be stored. Some people like to check something a lot more in depth called the misfire monitor. it's complicated to explain how it works, but the bottom line is that it will store a misfire history for an extended period of time. Although this is usually looked at, it's still not needed to perform the CSP.
3. at 78k, you will have needed to have you spark plugs changed at some point (due at 60k). they will also need to be the correct kind. aftermarket shops and even toyota dealerships are notorious for installing the wrong plugs because the direct injection GR motors take different plugs than the normal GR motors. Hopefully, you will have had them replaced at a lexus dealer so the history with the spark plug part number will be available. if you replaced them yourself, the technician will need to pull one out and verify it's the right part number. there's also a certain marking on only the factory installed plugs so they can tell if it's been replaced.
If you have not had spark plugs replaced, you will need to have it done. they can install new plugs and then do they misfire duplication procedure. new plugs will not affect the chances of a true carbon caused misfire to happen. even if they couldn't duplicate it.....welll.....you were overdue for plugs anyways.

besides....you have a 2010 right??? later 2010's already have the updated pistons and rings and the CSP does not apply. depends on vin number

I never received a letter but obviously was aware of the issue so when I started getting a P0420 trouble code to routinely come on after 77k miles on my '06 IS250 AWD (catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1), it was time to take it to Lexus and argue that the carbon build up is causing the rough idling and is also damaging the cat, causing the trouble code to pop.... They acknowledge the carbon build up issue and replaced the pistons and decarbonized the cylinder heads, etc. And also replaced the failed cat as a goodwill gesture. I was very satisfied with how the dealership handled this issue. Apparently the engine is covered under a nine year Lexus warranty.

If you got your car in December of 2009, it is actually probably one of the earliest 2010 models. The last 2010 models would have been made in late July/early August 2010.
Model year 2010 for the IS was 08/2009 to 08/2010. A 2010 sold in December 2009 was probably made in August or September, 2009.
Your production date will be on your data tag on the driver's door jam, but if you PM me your VIN I can tell you what month it was made and if it applies to the TSB or not.

I actually meant my "Correct" for diagtime's post, not yours.
