Default Why is the Lexus/Toyota Navagation so pathetic?

Look at the coverage area in this picture..
How is it that Toyota can get away with such spotty navigation? This is the 2012 coverage map.

Only the darker blue can be properly navigated. Simply terrible! I could go on....

I have just never heard of a nav unit that will only navigate in the bigger cities..this is not "The pursuit of perfection" in my opinion.

I've only owned my 250 for a few months now, and I just upgraded to V11 on the Nav and haven't had too much of a problem with it (aside from current construction in the DC area), but I was under the impression that the darker parts of the map were where the map was confirmed accurate. Doesn't the map exist for the rest of it, just that they can't say for 100% sure that all the roads are correct if some of them underwent construction?

if you live in some remote area and are constantly getting lost due to the oem nav maps, buy and install the vaistech ml+ system and connect your iphone or android-powered phone to the car so you can use either googlemaps or some other third-party map application on your car's oem system.

it doesn't void warranty, apparently, so you can uninstall the vaistech sysem should the oem nav head unit fail without them looking at cut wires or whatnot.

This is what they say...

Detailed Area Coverage = turn-by-turn guidance is available in shaded areas and on the Interstate freeway and state highway networks.

Non-detailed Area Coverage = turn-by-turn guidance may not (cannot) be provided on all roads. Major highways and streets are generally covered but residential network accuracy has not been confirmed.

Yes, most of the streets and names are there, but it just won't navigate you down them. You have to find your own way unless it is on a major street or highway.

I have to agree, my previous car's navigation system, albeit oudated disc from 06, (06 TSX) had much better maps and guidance than the the latest v11.1

Never had a problem with mine and never changed the maps since 08. Still navigates to destination but it's just for some rural areas or surface streets there isn't voice guidance to tell when to turn and stuff.

This is why I never bothered to get the ~$4000-$5000 navigation package for my IS350. Waste of money.

My $100 Garmin does the job much better and I can constantly keep it updated. $4500 saved (actually more with time value of money considerations).

$4500 invested now for the next 40 years (at which point I'll be near retirement age) @ 6% annual ROI is about $30,000-$40,000 after capital gains tax.

$30,000 extra down the road and all I have to do is use a superior, cheap, portable navigation system? I'll take it.

X2 on that.

It is night and day on the overall look of the car. Makes it look 10 times better, plus all the controls are touch screen which is pretty cool, and you get to see all maintenance records too. Not to mention the back-up camera as well..
