Default Wheel Guru's

Got a question about some wheels that I am looking to refinish. The following specs are:

20x9 +38
2 inch Lip

20x10.5 +45
3 inch Lip

What I want to know is if I can machine a few mm off each wheel, thus lowering the offsets so that I can run a 4 in rear lip and possibly a 2.5inch front lip?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and stay tuned for pics in the upcoming months

You mean shaving back face of your wheel off a few millimeters?

How few? 2-3 millimeters? It should be OK though not recommended. Wheels are designed and calculated carefully at the manufuacturerer facilty. Any modification might leads to unexpected decrease in structural rigidity of the rims.

I really don't think that's a good idea, never heard of someone attempting to do that. I just buy some spacers, wheels will be wider but lip will remain the same.

I assume you're talking about the lip on the wheels. I am wondering how shaving anything is going to change this? You would need to move the center portion of the wheel back.... (which i have never heard of)

2mm shaving isn't gonna do you any good. Adding an inch of lip will go from 10.5+45 to a 11.5+32. Front will go 9+38 to 9.5+31 just adding .5 inch no shaving.

Ahhh makes sense now. I was thinking The lower offset was achieved by shaving off the back of the face. Thanks for the insights

Lower offset = more poke
and vice versa

Shaving the back face will acheive Higher Offset.

I thought that you would like to shave the back off and compensate by changing to the deeper barrel to acheive deep dish look.

That was my thought process, but with the various responses I was led to think I was talking crazy..
