Default when replacing tires, do you need to replace TPMS?

Hi CL fam,

I'll be purchasing my 2nd pair of Hankook v12's. When replacing tires, is it necessary to replace the TMPS for each tire? The retail tire store that I'm getting my tires says that when replacing tires on a TPMS equipped vehicle, it is recommended to replace the components of the sensor that are susceptible to wear and corrosion from the elements. Is this true? I have never replaced this in the past when I got my first pair of Hankook v12's @ 25k? Anyhow, the TPMS replacement is $7.50 per tire. Worth it or waste of $?

Thanks

its a big difference between replacing the TPMS and replacing the wear and tear parts.

What 'parts' are they replacing? In the 'old days' prior to TPMS when I worked in the tire business, we sold rubber valve stems when selling tires. With TPMS there valve stems are integral TPMS, but are metal rather than rubber....

You don't likely need to replace the wear and tear parts every time you get new tires. It will help to know what those parts are but I suspect the valve core and the rubber parts...those are likely good for at least 50K..but keep in mind the 'ending' mileage on the next tire purchase, not just the current mileage

I'm sure what the retail store really meant was "It is recommended to replace the components of sensors that are susceptible to increasing store's profit as there are no additional labor involved which will generate higher profit margin"

So unless you are suspecting there are issue with your TPMS, I wouldn't replace it.

As a reference, in addition to my wife's 07 IS250, I also own 2004 Acura MDX with 156K miles on it which I never once replaced TPMS and it's doing fine.

It's just one of those optional add ons that shops offer. Politely decline.

If your TPMS/ valve stems are working fine and is not losing air from a leak then you are fine.

They're selling a kit to basically replace the grommet, valve core, retaining nuts, etc not the sensor itself... it's a TPMS rebuild kit.

And the TPMS makers really do all recommend you replace this every time you mount a new tire.

Now, you can argue it's those folks (since they make the kits) trying to get more money- and I agree you probably don't need to do this with each tire change- but this isn't a case of the tire place just making something up.

Do a google on TPMS rebuild kit and you'll find tons of threads debating if it's needed or not

While you probably don't need to replace them every time, they do eventually need to be replaced sometimes when/if they start leaking. You can either wait until that happens and replace it then, or do it preemptively before they start leaking. It's pretty cheap to do, but the choice is up to you.

Couldn't agree more with Jeff. This is cheap insurance, and shouldn't cost more than a few bucks/tire.

If you're referring to a Discount Tire Co or America's Tire Co, it's just a ploy to weasel out some extra money. Trust me, I would know, I used to work there.

NO NEED TO REPLACE ANYTHING!

FYI, the Lexus Factory Service Manual lists all the components of the TPMS (except for the sensor itself) as non-reusable parts. They might not need to be replaced every time the tire is replaced, but the service manual recommends doing so.

What the Lexus manual means is that if you remove the TPMS sensor, you should always replace the fitting kit, that doesn't always mean every time a tire is replaced, unless you remove the TPMS sensor.
