Default Quick Oil Chnage Question Before I Start

Would it be possible to crack loose the oil filter housing before draining the oil? I don't mean loosen it till it drips, but just enough to crack it loose. When we tried my friend's IS a while ago, we used that plastic cup wrench and strap wrenches with no luck. So we drained all the oil for nothing and had to put new oil back in using the old filter.

So I want to avoid having to drain all the oil in the event that even the SST tool doesn't work. Is it possible?

thanks in advance

Make sure you have a lot of leverage too, some people like to tighten the filter housing down like theres no tomorrow.

Yes you can. I loosen the oil filter first for that very reason.

I stripped my SST tool trying to loosen it. Ended up wrapping the oil filter housing with rubber bands to protect the aluminum and turning it with a monkey wrench.
