I don't agree everything German is unreliable. I would say any VAG group made (VW, Audi and even Porshe) is unreliable, and I am speaking from my own experience. Ask anyone who owned or owns 911 996 if they had any issues and you will find tons of parts that go over time. Just the other day I changed the light switch on my brothers 911. Of course that was VW part. I owned recent 2001 and up Audis and VW and I will stay away from them from now on. BMW on the other hand are pretty reliable cars. I have my 2001 M3 that I owned for over 6 years and had zero major issues with it. The car now has over 130k miles on it and runs like new. It needed bushings and components that wear (battery, bushings, tires, belts) replaced but that's expected.
So as far as my next car, it will most likely be newer 3series with AWD and the new 260 hp turbo 4 that gets awesome gas milage and is pretty fast.

So getting an 3.5 altima would be a downgrade from my current IS 350? Like I said earlier there really isnt any good cars in this price range...I def dont want german either since all the maintenance is much worse...

my brother just traded in his 08 Altima Coupe for a 11 Is350 and yes the Altima is a downgrade in every way I can think of. It feels cheap, the ride sucks, cabin is louder, and the icing on the cake he had the ECU replaced twice and the transmission once before trade in. After they replaced the transmission same problem popped up again which is why he called it a day and traded in. About a week later my friend at work with a 2009 Altima Sedan also had the tranny go out. If your going to leave Lexus for an economical and more spacious car do yourself a favor and buy a V6 Camry or even a V6 Accord. If you want to stay with lexus and you want more room look at the ES series as they are just as affordable as an IS.

I agree with the poster above, Honda Accord or Toyota Camry by far if you're going to go the economical route.

what's wrong with your 350?? I'm sorry but I've had friends who've had nothing but issues with theirs. I just see them dumping money into them (for things that shouldn't even be issues however they're out of warranty) One just ended up taking a massive loss bath just to get out of it
