If not selling it private, I recommend taking it to carmax as they usually offer you more than a normal dealer would

I'd strongly recommend private. I've Craigslisted cars and also used Autotrader. i think it's fair to say that you can get significantly more through a private sale. When I sold my '99 Prelude (back in early '05), various dealers offered me $4000 (on average) towards a trade of an IS300. The Prelude was in mint condition, but had 100k miles. I ended up selling it for $8300 off Autotrader, in about 2 weeks. I sold my '02 IS300 in September 2010 for $8200 (it had 120k miles and was in great shape too), even though dealers were only offering around $5000. This was also done on Autotrader and took about a month to sell.

I sold my mom's Millenia and my wife's Acura CL on Craigslist and didn't have any issues with joyriders. On all ads, be sure to specify "SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY," and "NO SCAMMERS." You'll still get inquiries from Nigeria, talking about money kept in escrow and such. Don't waste your time following those pieces of $#!%.

With that being said, I wish you good luck - however you decide to proceed!

Craigslist it for top dollar. Dealer if your worried about lemon law etc.

I have craigslisted 4 cars and 3 motorcycles all deals smooth as butter. You will get a ton of tire kickers. Bunch of times stayed home waiting for someone to come look at the car, never show up or answer the phone. Just comes with the territory I guess.

i sold my 4runner on ebay...to a local buyer--anything is possible. Don't worry, as long as banks are involved you are covered.

Autotrader notes "private seller" so buyers can find you easily - but I agree they are mostly dealer postings. I vote for craigslist however. There are search engines that make it easy to scour craiglist postings. I just bought my car last week from craigslist. My preference was 1-private sellers; 2-new car dealer; and 3-no-brand "dealer (their cars all come through auctions!$#) I specifically started avoiding all dealer listings due to the extra $2000 taxes due (no tax on private sales in Georgia!). I'm sure you'll have to deal with some hassle and disingenuous shoppers on craigslist, but as a buyer I was much happier being able to speak with the previous owner while avoiding the tax hit.
