Not always, it depends on the way you drive. Not everyone's car notifies them at 4-5K miles. Because of the way I drive, my light turns on at around 3K.

No, it doesn't.

Your car neither knows, nor cares, how you drive. It turns on every 5k miles period (assuming your car is an ISx50 anyway)

If you change the oil every 2 days it still comes on every 5k if you don't manually reset the light. If you go 20,000 miles without changing it, but you manually reset the light every 5k it still only comes on every 5k.

It has no clue whatsoever the actual state of your oil other than if there's too little in the car.

That's funny cause whenever I get an oil change they tell me approximately how many miles/months until I need my next oil change and sure enough it's 3k miles. Last time I changed it was at 93k and it's 96k ATM so clearly it turns on at 3K. I didn't mean to say that the car automatically knows when I need an oil change by the way I drive, I meant that it's programmed to turn on at every 3K miles because with the way I drive I wouldn't last 4-5k miles.

I'm not saying that you guys are wrong, just going by what I've seen and experienced.

Yes, because they tell everyone they are due in 3k miles in hope people who don't know any better keep paying them to change their oil way too often. Has nothing to do with what your car says.

The light comes on every 5k miles from the last time it was reset. (with a warning beginning at 4500 miles). Period.

It has no connection, at all, to how you drive, or when the oil was actually changed, because it has no idea about those things.

And FWIW, every 3000 miles is a lot too often for every single 2IS I've ever seen that actually sent their used oil to blackstone labs for analysis.
