We have specialized lawyers in my area that have a very high success rate (in the 90% range) at voiding tickets. For a fee of $250 - $300 you walk away with a clean record. Not looking over your shoulders for the next three years in fear of insurance issues make it worth every penny to me....
Detectors... I've had maybe 7 in my life so far from the original "Fuzbuster" to Cobra, Uniden, Vector and a few radio shack models. I'm on my second Escort 9500ix (1st was stolen), and am 100% sworn to Escorts GPS system.

Valentine One is also a GREAT radar detector. I personally think its the best on the market and to me, its the only real radar detector because it tells you what direction your getting targeted from too. Just don't forget that no radar detector will really save you from Laser and no radar detector can save you if you get paced by the cop instead of him using radar. Some people seem to forge this and blame the radar detector for not detecting the cop when it's not possible for it to do so. You will have instances where you pass a cop and it doesn't make a sound because the cop isn't using radar at that moment.

Also if you get one, lock it away in your glove at night. Thieves love them, they work really well and always fetch them some nice cash on ebay or craigslist. Too many Valentine One's stolen from my friends and family members cars lol

To the person who feels comfortable driving 100 MPH in a 60 or 70 MPH zone, please realize that kinetic energy increases with the square of velocity (KE = (1/2)(m)(v)^2)

When you increase your speed from 70 MPH to 100 MPH, your car's kinetic energy doubles. It doubles for every time your speed increases by a factor of 1.414 (square root of 2).

When you increase your speed from 50 MPH to 70 MPH, your car's kinetic energy doubles. From 70 MPH to 100 MPH, it doubles again.

The difference between getting into an accident at 50 MPH versus 70 MPH or 70 MPH versus 100 MPH is absolutely enormous. It's not easily discernible by just looking at the absolute speed difference.

Thanks for explaining this in scientific terms, as my admittedly more emotional argument wasn't really getting through.

If you want the absolute best, price is no object, then Escort and Valentine 1 are where you should be looking. Both are excellent detectors, have lots of features, and are well-reviewed. However, you're going to be paying $300-500 depending on which specific model you choose. I personally wouldn't recommend buying one used, because radar detectors do wear out/break down and you have no guarantees on reliability when buying used. It would be like buying a used iPhone - you have no idea how the previous owner treated it, nor how much longer you could expect it to last.

I personally wasn't willing to pay $400 for a radar detector when there are excellent ones on the market for a third that price. My Beltronics V955 was $150, and was great. It's manufactured by Escort. Another brand in that range is Whistler.

I agree, going 100mph is not worth the risk to yourself and to others. My brother used to race other cars on the road, even going to 115mph in a Camry! Things change when you grow up and realize that you'll get killed one day. Now, he rarely goes over 70.

1st, you were speeding. Max I will go over is 7-8 mph in a 55 or 60 zone. No more. Sorry, I know it sucks.

The rule of thumb I use now, and I heard is more accurate is 10%, not 10 mph. Stick to 10% and you should be fine. Go over, and well, whatever :P
