Default Should I buy this '07 IS350?

So my car was totalled last friday after being rear-ended sitting at a red light. I am now forced to get a car, quickly, as my loaner from insurance only lasts so long. I have a '07 IS350 being transferred to the carmax near me and was going to test drive it when it came in this weekend and possibly purchase.

I took the advice on the buyer's guide thread and got all the info from the lexus history site. Can someone help me decrypt this? Also, it's not going to be CPO so I am not sure how the warranty works on this if I did purchase and if any of the common issues could be fixed in time before it ran out? It appears it may be out of the 4 yr window judging by the service history.

Thanks for any help! It is an '07 IS350 with 39k miles and supposed to have the luxury upgrade for $26,100. I know there are probably better deals out there but I am in a time crunch and there are no other 350's for sale around town that I can see.

It looks pretty good, a few things popped up.

This sounds like the cam gear TSIB:

Dealer Reported 05/20/2008 Hendrick Lexus 8244 0446249 ENG KNOCK @ COLD STRT 06-07 IS250/350 07 GS350 06

That issue can recur, but it's fairly rare and so it's good news to see this has been performed since it's a $1500 repair out of warranty.

This string is odd:

Dealer Reported 04/15/2010 Hendrick Lexus 27192 0546954 SEE TECH NOTES.....DO NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING VEHICLE....CUSTOMER DECLINED TIRES A
Dealer Reported 04/15/2010 Hendrick Lexus 27192 0546954 MULTI POINT INSPECTION
Dealer Reported 11/09/2009 Hendrick Lexus 22142 0523947 FOUND TO BE NORMAL PAD SHIFT - MORE NOTICABLE WHEN CHANGING DIRECTION (FRONT TO

From what's written, it seems like the only reason they said recommend not driving vehicle was that they recommended the tires be replaced and the customer declined. That might be it, and he might have just been planning on getting tires somewhere else later and they were legally required to note their recommendation. In any case, call the original selling dealership who noted this, and ask them.

Looks like regular maintenance was kept up, that's good. They even overpaid for all the myriad "inspections".

Are there any open recalls? There are a few missing from here (fuel delivery pipes, valve spring, fuel pressure sensor) - that doesn't mean they haven't been performed, it may just be rolled into another item, but definitely ask.

Someone else can chime in here and verify, but the factory warranty is 4 year/50k miles, and I think that's from the in=service date, which would above seem to be 7/26/2007, which would mean you're out of factory warranty. However, you're still well within the 6 year/70k powertrain warranty.

2 things about Carmax:

1) When I looked at cars at Carmax, most of their cars seemed to have pretty beat-up interiors. I chalked it up to the fact that most of their cars are ex-rental or -lease cars, neither of which people treat well. In any case, make sure the interior is in good shape.

2) Carmax seems to know nothing about the options available for each car it sells and employs a standard approach by using generic terms like "Luxury package" or "Sport package" when it doesn't actually have that package as defined by the manufacturer. I saw many a Carmax car that was advertised as having an option or package and ended up not. So you might want to post the link here so people can look at it and determine if it truly has everything as advertised.

3) Lastly, test drive the car extensively, check for any signs of rattling (this won't be covered by any warranty) and other smaller things like the windshield molding.

Gosh, another one of these "Should I buy x50" thread. Yes of course you should buy this 350, its a great price! It sounds like your in a crunch of time, and if this is the only one that suits your budget, why not?

Test drive it, then decide for yourself.

I would go a Lexus dealership and ask them for a copy of full service history for the vehicle. The Lexus owners site lists brief details but doesnt give the full details which the full service history does like you would see in an invoice.

Thanks for the quick response. Here is a link to the car - http://www.carmax.com/enus/transfers...tml?sn=7474798

A lot of the details aren't listed because it is in transfer and they take it off the main site. Pictures are hard to tell the interior quality but I don't expect a 4 yr old car to be flawless.

As for the recalls, I'm not sure how to tell if they were performed. Would I just call Lexus and ask about a VIN and the recall? When I login to the site, it has a recall link and there were a couple listed. I'm not sure if that is to tell me those need to be performed or if those are just the recalls listed for this model in general.

As for the options, I know it said memory seats and the pics show wood grain, so wouldn't that mean the luxury base package?

Thanks again.

That sounds like an amazing deal from what I have seen. There are a million bmw's around town, but I can't find ANY is350's, crazy. Your's is a year newer and maxed out while mine would be a year older and no nav/rear cam and probably a bit more worn. A little depressing but I don't have time to wait for the perfect deal.

You should be able to call up any dealer, provide the VIN and ask if there are any open recalls. And yes, if you have both those characteristics, I think it should have the luxury package. Would be best to see the original window sticker, which hopefully is still with the car.

I had a very similar situation as you. My previous car broke down and needed a car fast. But I was still picky. I wanted an 08 IS350 with Luxury package in Glacier Frost Mica but thats next to impossible to find used. Carmax was the only place that had the closest car I could find and closest to me. I transferred it too. I finally got a 07 IS350 in Tungsten Pearl (Silver) with 37k miles with Navigation, Lux pack, headlamp washer, and parking sensors for $27,990. Reasonable I thought, given the mileage and options. Only options it didn't have were the radar cruise control and ML DVD sound system.

True, I could have gotten a similarly equipped car for 2k less since Carmax doesn't negotiate. But I was looking for 6 months already and couldn't find the car I wanted, and my old car breaking down was what triggered my purchase.

My bumper to bumper warranty is gone but still have powertrain for 3 more years. I also bought 4 years and 70k mile warranty from Carmax for about $1000. I think its worth it cuz I already had them replace the rear windshield. When doing warranty work, you can even take it to Lexus.

Carmax has a 5 day return policy so when I bought it, I took it to Lexus for a car inspection and found nothing wrong. Make sure you set up an appointment at Lexus before hand. I also bought an Autocheck and asked them for a Carfax report and nothing came up.

Look at my threads below:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ood-price.html

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ggestions.html

When you test drive it, I suggest you ask them to take it on the highway to see if you hear or feel anything unusual. Then when you come back to Carmax, park it and visually inspect it. I found out 2 weeks later that my rear bumper was painted because I see some paint on the mufflers and rear reflectors. No biggie tho. Maybe it was a minor paint scratches as the rear bumper is original to the car. Good Luck!

Yeah, my deal sounds pretty similar to yours. Similar miles and model, but a little cheaper due to yours being more fully loaded. What kind of condition was your car in when you were able to see it after being transferred?

I'm worried about the interior and exterior condition when I go out to drive it because most of the cars were disappointing when I went out to the store and checked out a few the other weekend. It's hard to tell from the pics of my car, but I'm hoping for the best.

Did your's have all the recalls completed or did you need to do that yourself? What about any TSIB (not sure what that stands for)? This whole rattling issue is worrisome in that everyone says it will pop up at some point. The 1k warranty sounds interesting. So from the time of your purchase you can take it anywhere to have work done? What kind of stuff does it cover (would this rattling issue be covered)? Is it 4 yrs and 70k miles AFTER the time of your carmax purchase?

Thanks for the info and glad to see someone else in my shoes.

I transferred it too. I finally got a 07 IS350 in Tungsten Pearl (Silver) with 37k miles with Lux pack, headlamp washer, and parking sensors for $27,990.

When you test drive it, I suggest you ask them to take it on the highway to see if you hear or feel anything unusual. Then when you come back to Carmax, park it and visually inspect it. I found out 2 weeks later that my rear bumper was painted because I see some paint on the mufflers and rear reflectors. No biggie tho. Maybe it was a minor paint scratches as the rear bumper is original to the car. Good Luck!

Where are you all finding these deals? I've searched everywhere on every site and I'm just not seeing is 350's out there. I guess I'm in the wrong location, but I am looking in a 500 mile radius.

TSIB stands for Technical Service Information Bulletin, it's essentially just a bulletin created by Toyota for common issues (directives on warranty coverage, parts information, and repair steps) sent out to techs.

Carmax's warranty is actually pretty solid and comprehensive as far as aftermarket warranties go, and reasonably priced as well. I'd definitely look into it.

I definitely will if I decide to purchase this car. Any idea if the carmax warranty would include these TSIB issues?

A lot of the details aren't listed because it is in transfer and they take it off the main site. Pictures are hard to tell the interior quality but I don't expect a 4 yr old car to be flawless.

As for the options, I know it said memory seats and the pics show wood grain, so wouldn't that mean the luxury base package?

Thanks again.

I'm not seeing any memory seats in those pictures... which means it's premium package (woodgrain and upgrades seats only), not luxury package.

Quick Reply: Should I buy this '07 IS350?
