Plus one on the synthetic. Going from regular to synthetic is no problem; however, going back to regular after synthetic is not recommended.

Hence if you don't know, go synthetic.

Also, under normal driving conditions and driving style regular will do just fine; however, if you want to drive your car hard, it's just that extra protection for your engine, which is great.

Not recommend by whom?

Because the folks who actually make motor oil say it's just fine to do that.

They're completely, entirely, 100% compatible with each other.

You can even top off a regular fill with synthetic, or vice versa.

Hence why they sell semi-synthetic blends.

(though you lose quite a lot of the benefits of synthetic if you run any regular oil at the same time, ditto for blends which I'm not a fan of for that reason)

Not recommended by me

Alright, so here is my low down on oil. I had an Infiniti g35 which was running 5w-30 of fully synthetic oil. This was the group IV fully synthetic oil which similar to Redline, Amsoil fully synthetic stuff and not the group III Mobil One synthetic stuff which is basically more clean/refined regular oil.

I switched it to regular oil and the engine was not the same... meaning less gogo. It just did not feel right. It also ran louder at idle. So I switched it back to the good stuff and it was back

Just sharing my story.
Thanks

Guys/Gals
Try doing what I did if in need of parts, just shop around and if you find a good price OEM parts, send that offer to any of your local lexus dealerships and ask if they are willing to match their competitors' prices. I did that and I got good results.

Sewell has the 60k mile tune up kit for $169 + $12 shipping. Superstition Springs Lexus in AZ offered me to beat that price. Here are their prices
1. plugs $14.86ea. other dealers up to $22ea.
2. oil filter $4.46 other dealers up to to $9
3. cabin filter $31.61 other dealers up to $37
4 air filter $19.55 other dealers up to to $25

I emailed these prices to a few of my local dealerships and just one replied offering to match these prices. Of course I took their offer due to the fact that I hate waiting for the mail carrier and also because my service light had been on for about three weeks and my car was reaching the 60k mile mark.
That same day a drove to Longo Lexus El Monte and spoke to Chris (nice guy). He had my parts ready and he even offered 7Qrts of oil for $4.76ea. I paid my mechanic $60 and the whole thing was about $243 compared to dealer prices, Not bad! Does anybody get even better deals for these parts, I would like to know? I hope Chris from Long Lexus can match any prices!

Good luck

As noted in the other thread, Sewell has better prices- you forgot to check the club lexus discounted price when you checked pricing.

hey.

I have three choices:
Castrol regular oil 5w-30 at walmart $18.50 per 4 quarts

Toyota genuine motor oil 5w-30 at toyota dealer $3.57 per 1 quart

Mobil 1 5w-30 fully synthetic at Sams club $35 per 6 quarts

I know that Castrol is good , Mobil one would be the best probably but what is Toyota genuine motor oil? Is it any good oil? I was surprised it is so cheap even at the toyota dealership..?
Any suggestions? Thx

Considering you can go 2-3 times longer on full synthetic as opposed to conventional, even the "toyota" oil will be more expensive in the long run:

12qts @ 3.57 = $42.84 vs the $35 per 6 qts on the Mobil 1 (assuming you change your oil at 10k+ miles as opposed to a 5k conventional oil change).

Don't forget, you need 6.7 qts to do an oil change.

Depends. How often do you plan to change it? What kind of driving do you do?

If you do mostly normal driving and are willing to run longer change intervals than get the Mobil 1 and change it once a year (up to 10k miles anyway... probably up to 12-15k if you change the filter halfway through).

If you are going to insist on changing every 6mo/5k miles or you do severe duty driving (excessive idling, lots of short trips where the engine never runs at operating temp, etc) then buy the cheapest stuff you can find since you're not running it long enough to care about how "good" it is.
