Bumpers are plastic, they won't rust.

+1 on bumper being plastic and not rusting. As for what you can do to it, depends on how much you can live with it not being right. I wouldn't be happy with anything but respraying the bumper. Hard to tell the size but I could almost guarantee that touchup paint with be noticeably different on the area that is gray. You can minimize the appearance by claying and polishing but won't 'fix' it. General rule of thumb is that polishing/compounding won't correct anything that is deep enough that you can catch with a fingernail.

Dude....to be honest, you GOTTA paint that thing. It looks bad and touch up paint will look ugly too! Unless you can live with that TYPE OF STUFF.

will most likely be repainting but at the moment I am short on money..i just need to make it less noticeable until I am able to repaint it, anyone know the average cost of painting the bumper is?

just look in the yellow pages and look for a bumper pain repair.. they can paint and blend it.. will cost alot less then a full bumper to be painted and buffed

A full repaint of the bumper is around 500 where I live at a really nice place. I have a guy who will do mine for 180, he has all the tools but now works out of his garage doing bumpers and rim repair--my rear bumper is crappy anyway and anything would be an improvement.

I have had good luck getting smaller scraches out by filling in the area with touchup paint, then a week later wet sanding w 3000 grit, then buffing and polishing. again nothing that big--yours looks like it really will not get that out.

good luck.

Definitely needs to be repainted! That's awful, I would be infuriated if I did not know how that got on my car.
