Default CPO or not?

I did some research and I just want to know if I have this right. If the car is still under the original 48 months or 50,000 miles warranty then there is really no point in buying CPO since I can just buy extended warranty? if it's not under the 48 months or 50,000 miles warranty then I should go with CPO just to be safe?

Thank you.

Depends how good of a deal I guess your CPO purchase is.

I think you are correct. I didn't buy my car CPO but I was able to get an extended warranty from Lexus dealerships

Yep. If its under 4yrs/50k miles you should be able to buy the extended warranty. There's a thread somewhere here about where you can buy it for cheap too. CPO includes the "detailed" inspection of the car too though, but any good mechanic will inspect a car for you for cheap.

But if your buying it from a Lexus dealer and its under 4yr/50k and NOT a CPO, you might wanna find out why its not a CPO

Also, not sure where you are in CA, but if your around the 626 let me know, i can get you a hook up for a mechanic to inspect the car if you wanna go that route.

i'm in Irvine, somewhat close to 626. I'm actually shopping for my friend who's looking to buy this weekend and has a budget of $30k. He was looking at CPO IS250 which are all around 27-32k on Lexus sites which seems a little high to me. So i told him for $30k he should be able to find a nice IS350. Thoughts?

$23K-$24k you should be able to find a CPO IS250 with about 30-40k miles. So im sure an IS350 will come in under $30k. Lexus of Escondido in S.D. has a 350 for $24k right now, has 62k miles tho.

^^ that's what i thought as well. Going to see if I can talk the the price down. Dealers seem to be low on inventory for CPO350 though so who knows.

I paid 23 and change for an 08 CPO w/ 28k. Another 1750 or so got me another 3 years on the factory warranty for a total of 6 years. And if I sell the car before the first 3 is up, I get a refund on the extension.

finding a CPO 250 isn't hard, its the 350. 350 are already rare, to find a CPO one will put you pretty close to $30k

I bought a CPO, but honestly if you find a good one that has been well taken care of and has a factory warranty I would go with that too.

I was looking for a specific interior/exterior combo which was hard to find at least for me lol. If I would have done my research properly I probably would have had them remove the CPO certification and extended the warranty myself before the factory warranty went up, but I know for next time.

It's very simple. You just have to do the math. If you're looking at a car that's still within the factory 4 yr/50k warranty and it's CPO, ask the dealership what the CPO portion of the purchase price is. That is, ask him what the car would cost if you didn't buy it CPO. They should knock off $1k or so if you don't buy it CPO. Take that number and compare it to the cost of purchasing an extended Platinum VSA from Lexus for 3 years/up to 100k miles. The name I've heard thrown around the most is Jerry Johnson (who I believe is in KC, but just search the forum for his name - he sells very reasonably priced extended warranties).

If you find that the dealer is willing to take off $1,000 if you don't buy it CPO, that means the CPO warranty on the car costs $1,000. If you call Jerry Johnson (or any other Lexus dealer) and he's willing to sell you a Platinum VSA for 3 years/100k miles for $1,200, then clearly the CPO warranty is a better deal. If he's willing to sell it for $800, then tell the dealer you want to purchase the car non-CPO for $1,000 off, and then go buy the Platinum VSA.

The Platinum VSA is identical to the CPO warranty in every respect except the Platinum VSA is transferable to the next owner, but the CPO warranty is not (this may warrant a slight price premium for the Platinum VSA). The Gold and Powertrain VSAs are NOT comparable to the CPO and cover fewer components. So you should only compare the Platinum VSA to the CPO warranty.

Here's a thread with more detail: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...-warranty.html

Post #6 gives Jerry Johnson's info. Post #18 gives more detail on the Lexus-offered warranty options.
