How low can you go on fuel tank?

Ummm....correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it damaging to the fuel pump and injectors if you let it run till almost out or where you are 'running on fumes'? I try not to let any of my cars go down past 1/4 tank. 1/8 at the most.

Same story pretty much in my 250, 0 miles on range computer = 15.1 gallons pumped. I have taken it past 0 a lot of times but have never run out completely. The most I've ever gotten on a tank is 470-ish I think. I can't remember I've got way too many miles to remember. But my avatar is an undoctored photo of what the car THINKS it can do on a tank.

Running pretty low would very, very slowly kill the pump since it has to work harder to pump fuel compared to a full tank where you can let the weight of itself push the gas down. As for when you run out of gas, yeah that's pretty bad for everything, especially the cat's I believe.

I never let my tank get below 1/4 tank for two extremely important reasons!!!
One: the pump motor uses the fuel to cool the motor
Two: depending on if the motor is pulse width modulated which helps control fuel pressure. And to protect the motor. Average fuel pump motor draws a lot of amps under normal operating conditions with >1/4 tank of gas and spins at a certain rate with the friction caused by the fuel. With low fuel to no fuel. The motor has nothing slowing it down and it spins much faster thus burning out the motor.
also you risk the lever sticking from rubbing the bottom of the tank especially with debris settling.

I have to agree with close to 2 gallons because I did the calculations (think it is correct) based on what the readouts gave me.
Trip : 396 Miles
Tank Avg: 27.4 MPG
396 M/27.4 MPG = 14.5 (Gallons used)
17.1 - 14.5 = 2.6 Gallons left.
So I guess I could of travalled an extra 20 miles based on the above if I really needed to.

Actually, ever since the Mk4 supra Toyota has been using a fuel pump/tank design that has a small reservoir with the pump in it holding fuel to keep it cool... so you can run much lower than 1/4 tank without any harm.
See posts 23-26 for an explanation-

You'd still wanna refill by the time the light comes on though to be safe, but you're certainly doing no harm to the fuel pump in the 1/8-1/4 tank range on these cars.
