Hmm I will bump my question .

Can I take the face off of a 3 piece wheel without taking the tires off? Or would that just be a stupid way to hurt myself?

I suspect you would hurt yourself, 3 piece wheels have a separate inner and outer barrels, once their unscrewed that tire pressure is going to get out of there.

If its a 2 piece wheel you should be okay because its the barrel and then the face of the wheel which bolts on to the barrel.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS ADVICE, THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT...WAIT UNTIL THE EXPERTS CHIME IN, CONSIDER IT A FREE BUMP..............

Yeah, waiting on the experts who have experience with this. I know the inner and outer barrels are sealed, but am not too sure if I could just remove the face (connected by the rivets) without damaging the wheel. Or maybe I just have the anatomy of a 3 piece all wrong .

My thinking is that if I deflate the tires, it wouldn't cause much stress on the wheels to create any damage to myself or the wheels.

You can not take them apart with the tires on. Even deflated tires have force out on the bead. The lip and barrels mate each other on a flat surface that has a coat of RTV on it and a bead around the rim. If your wheels are not leaking don't break the seal. It's a PIA to clean all the old stuff off and seal it. I just added a new thin coat on the rim because the edges of the rTV was peeling from all the tire changes.

I just sanded and dremeled all the bubbling chrome so it wouldn't spread. Cleaned all the rust and oxidation too.

Clear coated the back side last night and peeled the tape off the polished faces. Wife only allows me 1 hour per night of wheel time since I've been using 4 hours a night the past few weeks.

Gonna clear the faces Friday night. Should have some pix of the clear job by Saturday.

All clearcoated and drying. Gonna need a good wetsand and buff to get the gloss.

Barrels clean and waiting for faces.
