Default Dumb Question About IS vs 335i

Ok I don't have a IS, I've got a GS430 - however my next car will likely be in the IS class, so these are the cars I'm looking at.

This may be a dumb question, but how does the BMW TWIN turbo v6 in the 335i put out pretty much the same power as Lexus IS350 naturally aspirated v6? The guy at the dealership told me the v6 in the IS350 is not turbo and the BMW is. Am I missing something here?

there's no V6 on the 335i... it's an inline 6 with twin turbos putting out 300hp... it will put out the same amount of power depending on the tune on the engine and there are many other factors other than the engine....

Sorry, didn't mean v6, just a habit. Inline 6 you're right. The displacement on the 335i is a bit lower, but needs twin turbos to equal the lexus natural aspirated 305hp (give or take). Like I said, dumb questions but - Just seems weird to me...

It's been dyno proven and stated in many mag that the 335i puts out over 330rwhp so it will definitely take on a Stock IS350. About the vid, first of all the IS is moded and secondly, it didn't appear that the BM was trying at all. But then again who wants to deal with bimmer's reliable nightmare unless you have a lot of cash to burn and even more free time to pay visits to the dealer.

Wrong. The 335i doesn't put out anywhere near 330 whp. That's just ludicrous.

It's been estimated that it puts out 320 to 330 horsepower at the crank, which 4 to 14 hp more than the IS350 which is rated at 316 at the crank.

330 WHP is only achievable by say... intake+exhaust+dp+ maybe new FMICs.... and a tune.... other than that.. it's impossible 330whp... i've owned the 335i... i definitely feel that it is a faster car compared to the 350 stock to stock... i think... that's me... that's what i feel.. i like the drive though!

i've yet to see a vid of a 335 beating an IS350, clearly someone will prove me wrong in the next hour, but just saying.

You do know that the 335i is only 0.1 second slower 0-60 than the older under rated M3 w/ 333HP right and only 0.2 seconds and 1 mph behind the M3 1/4 mile right? These are at the crank numbers not BHP of course.

I have an 07 IS350, and my buddies 07 335i rwd will pull on me no matter what gear / starting position we are.

Stock for stock, 335i will walk our cars (not by bus lengths) but enough to be embarrased.

Modded 335i will take us immediately and leave in the dust.

Sorry guys.

There ya go, I'm afraid I'm not the one that is wrong carLx. However, our 350 should not be too far behind their tails stock for stock.

Stock numbers I know nothing about, on top of that the driver is also a factor but once the modding starts the 335i will outpower the IS350 anyday.

That's true but you're forgetting to take into account the fact that 0 to 60 times and quarter mile times are a function of many variables, not just horsepower (and weight).

There's gearing, aerodynamics, many other factors involved.

On dragtimes, there are a number of stock 335i dynos -

270 whp
275 whp

Stock IS350s dyno around 265-268 whp. 5-10 whp less.

It's all consistent with the 335i being more like 320 hp at the crank, which is what I said initially.

You...just used the anecdotal evidence of a single person.

The results from multiple drag races tell a different story. The range of the quickest bone stock quarter mile times fro the 335i are 13.2xx to 13.5xx

Guess what the quickest bone stock quarter mile times for the IS350 are? 13.2xx to 13.5xx

I fail to see how a 13.2xx to 13.5xx car (335i), stock, has the capability of embarrassing a 13.2xx to 13.5xx car (IS350).
