A little dab of anti-seize would have saved you a lot. Anti-seize is for aluminum/steel contact surfaces to avoid galvanic corrosion. Had you put some on the stem, you could put any metal on it and you'd be fine. PBlaster would have got them off too. WD-40 is only good for getting rid of water (WD = water displacing). It's useless for getting corroded fittings apart.

Glad you got it fixed, but you did it the most expensive way possible.

Guys, I am a newbie and just got a certified pre-owned 2006 IS250. Ironically I ordered valve caps off eBay with the Lexus logo. By looking at these, can someone please confirm if these will be ok with my car? I do not want the same problem as this gentleman had. Material says: Stainless Steel Alloy.

Thank you!

^^^^I wouldn't use 'em. In it's defense the add does does say:

Logo Caps will fit on all standard air valve stem

Notice it does not say TPMS.

Hey Lou, thanks for responding. Damn, these just arrived today and look so nice too! I am going to have an engineer friend of mine look at them and tell me if I will be ok.

I know this is a little late but i have these on my F and no problems at all. The rubber o-ring inside is really nice too! I've even put on a new set of rear tires if that counts and the dealer said nothing about them.

I guess I wanst the only one. This happened to me just a month ago. I went to swap to my summer tires and I heard the dreadful snap. $10 caps never again. I still need to get 4 sensors and then have them programed. How lucky am I.

Unhappy

Here are some reasons why not to buy these. Not only did the caps corrode because of the brake dust but two of the sensor stems snapped off and the other two got cross threaded. My worst mod ever what was I thinking. Now i keep this as a reminder certain thing must stay factory.

Default Protect Your Original Tire Valve Caps !!!

It seems you cannot just call the Lexus dealer and just order a new set of the original tire valve caps when the bone head tire repair shop puts on an ugly used incorrect valve cap in place of your nice metal brushed aluminum cap. If you try and order them from Lexus you get a plastic cap that looks sort of like the nice aluminum one your car came with. Part # 90942-A5006. (That Doesn't Really Match). If you press Lexus, you can get a chrome cap that looks like the old nice brushed aluminum cap Part # 90942-05029 (That Still Doesn't Match) The Lexus parts department (2 different dealers say you cannot get the original cap (Lexus doesn't offer it) I find this hard to believe since they have been using this cap for a long time. (My 08 ISF has them & my New RCF uses the same cap. So I would advise to remove the caps before you let the tire monkey loose them for you and put them back on after the tire monkey is done with your car. The good/bad news is you will probably come out with a set of mismatched tire caps you can use on your wheelbarrow or kids bicycle.

If I were ever using metal on metal in an environment that is likely to promote metal fusing I would use a antiseize.

Just accidentally did this same thing with my wife's SC430 this morning. Didn't take much force at all. Felt like such a bonehead. Took it to a shop I trust and even without TPMS the stems and install (balance etc) cost $138. $98 of that was just parts. Because the typical rubber valve stems that millions of cars use of course aren't good enough for the engineers at Lexus

Always use plastic caps! Happen to me one of my other cars. I had metal caps on the stems snapped right off on me.

This has me a wee bit worried as I have the same caps... but they're on my summer wheels and they don't look anything like the condition yours were in to cause the issue. May just keep an eye on them.
