Default URGENT: Spilled 1 gallon jug of water on back seat, what can I do?

I had a 1 galon jug of water and the cap broke off while I was driving and almost the entire jug spilled on the back seat, and the carpet is wet too. Most of the water is likely inside the seat cushion.

I am concerned about mold/smells/damage to my vehicles interior. How can I clean up a mess like this? Should I remove the seat cushion and put it out to dry in the sun tomorrow? Use a blow dryer? I can't really towel it off, there is nothing to dry it all went into the seat and the carpet.

If anyone has suggestions, experience with this, let me know. I don't want my vehicle to get ruined.

Thanks for your help, hope to get some replies tonight so I can start working on this right away and not let the water just sit there and get yucky.

I'd try using a blow dryer for a little bit, and maybe even leaving a fan blowing overnight

Remove the seats/cushion and air out your car the entire night in your garage etc. You can blow dry the seats and cushion as well. Using a dry towel to soak up the water in the floor/carpet might help too. Good luck.

How do you take the seats/cushion out?

I had something like this happen before. I had a vase with a bunch of flowers tip over from becoming unsecured from the seatbelt. I was driving alone and had stuff in the front seat already. I just took a bunch of towels as soon as I could (when I got home 15-20 min later) and soaked as much of it as i could. Microfiber towels worked better than regular towels. Then I just let it air out. No smell, mold, or anything was left over. I guess I got lucky.

I had water soaked into the seat cushion from a road trip... 9hr duration... When I found out that the seat was wet, I got a towel to try to soak it back out.. and I just let it air out... I'm lucky enough to have everything back to normal..

Well it seems like it's difficult to get the water out since I have the ventilated leather seats, the water probably went down those little holes, and there is not really anything to soak up with the towel. It will probably be ok, but who knows, I'm going to park it in the sun all day tomorrow (EEEK!) and leave all the windows open to let it air out... Hopefully that does the trick, I *HATE* any rotten water smells..

wet/dry vac as much out. then air it out so it doesn't get moldy with windows open in garage. at least it's only water.

when I saw the thread title on the forum homepage, it said
URGENT: Spilled 1 gallon jug...

I thought it was 1 gallon jug of ice cream. then I would recommending finding the biggest spoon you have and having a sundae.

Don't worry man, I have the perforated leather seats too (the holes). It'll turn out fine as long as you air it out. If you're really paranoid, I'd use a hair dryer on low heat for a little bit and hover over the areas slowly being careful not to stay over an area for too long. Good luck!

Heated garage, windows down, air out over night. You'll probably be ok.

If you're worried I would go nuts with a hair dryer and microfiber towels before you leave it overnight.

Sucks that I don't have a garage, I park in a parking garage with 30 other cars in my complex, and we've had break ins in the past, so I'd hate to leave it open all night, so I will probably just leave it open all day at work in the sun.

Go to home depot (paint department) and get some DampRid. This will help with the humidty and smell.
