1. The IS has direct injection engine, while the ES still using a traditional one;

2. The IS has 'better' suspession (performance-wise);

3. The IS is RWD while ES is not. No one can resist the lure of rear wheel powered. Can not tell the difference between RWD and FWD? - then may be you should not look into the performance car market.

4. The IS platform is specially designed in Lexus and only used on IS. The ES platform is generally designed by Toyota and widely used on Camry etc. Why pay a higher premium and still get a 'public' car? That's ridiculous.

5. Power is the least important factor when buying a performance car. If I want power, I just need a muscle car. With just over $30k+, I can buy a 2010 Camaro V8, or Pontiac G8, Mustang V8, 370z, or 2-3 yrs old M3, S4, C63AMG etc. More power, quicker acceleration. So please tell me, why you choose Lexus? What are you looking for when you are buying a Lexus car?

Frankly, if I wanted to buy a really quick compact luxury car within the $30-40k price range, I will definitely choose 135i.

The only reason I can think of is the ES looks kind of fugly compared to the IS.

Two totally different cars. The ES is all about luxury and no sport. I only see old people driving it. That is NOT appealing at all to me and my driving interests. The IS is designed to be more sporty and youthful. There is a lot more to a car purchase than horsepower numbers.

No offense to ES owners but I would not drive that car. IMO it looks like a freaking Camry with Lexus Badges. IS>ES All day everyday.

To most automotive enthusiasts, the answer is obvious (as detailed above in several posts).

Personally, perhaps I'm cheap but still like better stuff, I would buy the ES just because it looks more expensive. (and is, slightly).
why not just get the IS350?

I love statements like this. I'm 70 and drive an IS-F. I know, I know, I'm too old to be driving such a car. I should be in an ES, right? Well, my wife is. IMHO, she's not old, she's just as beautiful as ever. But to you, she's probably old. But, then again, judging by your statement, what do you know

The point here is that they are different types of cars for different types of people. My wife demands a nice safe luxurious automobile that handles up to her limits. And, she has that. I demand RWD, lotsa power, handling, and luxury in that order, and I have that. We are both happy, and OLD

Lou

Regardless of how someone states it, the numbers back up the fact. According to Lexus, the ES sells to a much higher age bracket compared to the IS.
Congrats on the IS-F btw. (You luck sog!!)

the ES is a sofa on wheels, plus its just a nicer camry. there is no toyota model that is similar to the IS. unless there's a RWD, sportier toyota that i dont know about.

The ES IS a glorified Camry. A luxurious car with a soft ride, mean't to be a fuss free driving vehicle. The IS is mean't to be a sporty RWD car to bring in a younger buying crowd, not to mention compete with say the G35/37 and 3 Series. It really depends on what you need/want. If you have a family then the ES is probably the way to go in terms of space. My neighbor has an ES and every week when I wash my IS, I seem him looking at it longingly
