Default BMW vs Lexus OEM HIDs

Hey all,

I was driving today and notice a 2010 335i. We were on the highway and I noticed that his HIDs were brighter, whiter, and illuminated a wider and more distant area. I couldn't tell if they were stock or not.

Just wondering if anyone knows if Lexus HIDs are less white and illuminate less area? My Acura's HID seems to have a more blue-ish tint. I don't know what to make of the Lexus's HID. Some times I question whether they are aimed properly because I noticed that my HIDs hit the highway signs pretty well, perhaps too well...

Ideas?

i dont think you need to aim the HIDS for our cars cuz they are projectors

The projector of the ISX50 is poorly designed due to the design of the head light. Usually projectors have the bulbs inserted in the rear, but our cars have the bulb inserted through the side of the projector; this causes the output to suffer in color, width, and clarity. This is why a hand full of us 2ISers have opt to retrofitting our headlights. I can tell you from experience, our headlights are hard to retrofit BUT it is definitely doable.

yeah, lexus HID projector's are suck except LS430&460 other than that they all suck. I hope lexus would redesign better projector for our IS or other lexus.

2IS utilize the newer technology D4S mercury free burners. These are environmentally friendly when damaged or disposed. Where as the 3series uses the old D2S burner. D2S is brighter.

However if the D4S is paired with a rear bulb entry projector equipped with a clear lense, that would make a world of difference. But it is true the D2S is slightly brighter; the projector/lense is the deal breaker.

If I am not mistaken, the LS460 is equipped with D4S from stock. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

the lense that are used by Lexus are 1 of the cheaper quality out in the market. if to do retrofit, S2k got the best lense out there.

Oh wow, I didn't know that Lexus's kit is that bad.

Anyway, the light is definitely aimed higher. I remember reading from some thread here that there are screws to adjust the aim... or maybe something with the AFS... not sure...

The S2K is a 2.5 inch lens. Most of the 2IS are 3 inch. A 2ISer would have to opt for the 3" STi replica clear lense; best bang for buck

Not so much of a cheaper quality. 2IS has Fresnel lens; its a different texture. You can still swap the lense out with a pair of clear lens for 80 bucks and improve just the sharpness. BUT the color, width and overalll output will be the same. At this point, its the projector design that's killing it

The LS430 and 460 are excellent projectors with huge width and size partly due to the use of side reflectors. However, the projectors on the RX330, SC430, and ES350, amongst others I'm sure, have projectors that with a little lens modification, have great spread and intensity too. The IS projectors, however, suffer from poor design as mentioned by mahcah.

Another misconception to clear up is that just because the light is bluer (as mentioned by your reference to Acura), it does not mean it is stronger. People with 8000K HID bulbs may think that they're getting more light, but it's actually just an illusion caused by our eyes' sensitivity to blue light.

you can take your car to the dealer and have them aim it for you if you are still under warranty.
