Default HID/AFS stand alone option, installation?

what does the installation entail when getting the oem hid/afs stand alone option? do they replace the entire headlight? do they have to pull the dash or anything like that to program the afs on/off?

Yes they would replace the headlight assemblies, as well as program the AFS systems to work with the car (not sure how that is done).

Sorry I can't be of more help

OEM HIDs are a factory-installed option put in as the vehicle is built.

It's not something your local dealership can add later.

I thought he was talking about it as a factory installed standalone option

I'm pretty sure the headlights and wiring harness has to be replaced and probably more things than that.

i was reading other posts regarding the hid/afs as a stand alone option. i couldn't find anything on what the installation was like, but if that's not the case then oem hid/afs as a stand alone doesn't exist?

Your best bet is to call a local Lexus dealership and find out if it can be added and ask whats entailed to have it done. If it's not that much work than source out the parts yourself and DIY.

Significant challenges exist to have the AFS option work correctly on a non hid-equipped car, and is likely out of the scope of a DIY task. As far as I know, nobody has successfully gotten the AFS to work.

Stand alone option means it can be ordered without any other packages when ordering a new car.

It has nothing to do with being able to add it after the car has been built.

HIDs are a stand alone option because you can add them to a car that hasn't been built yet, without having to buy any other options.

Your local dealer can't add them after the fact though.

There's 2 different concepts going on here:

1) IS HID/AFS a stand alone option? Technically, yes:

Bi-Xenon™ High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) $875 [3]
http://www.lexus.com/models/IS/features/pricing.html
But--it's pretty hard to find one that isn't "packaged" with HID/AFS.

2) What's involved in installing them? The same thing that's involved when the install the halogens. It's a factory option--they don't retrofit the car. When the car is built, it's built with the HIDs and AFS, rather than halogens. It's like asking what's involved in installing the 3.5L engine if you opt for 350 instead of a 250.

"Standalone" does not mean "Dealer installed."
