Will LED Headlights available to 2IS ?
From the LEXUS magazine:
2010 RX 400h will have standard LED headlights insetadof HIDs.....do you think LEXUS will put LED hadlights as an option for 2010 IS? or we have to wait for 3rd Gen IS?
According to the magazine, LED headlights' avg live is 20-50K hours

I believe all hybirds get their own special headlamp design as a way to distinguish them from non-hybirds....just like they all have the 3 lamp housing design...super cool though!!!!

I guess its an option for the HS too. Dont ask me how it gives you better gas mileage.
And LEDS are not as crisp as HID. In the LS section someone did a side by side test of the LED in the 600 and the HID in a 460. Theres a picture but you'll have to search for it.
Like the all-new 2010 RX 450h hybrid utility vehicle that made its debut in November, the HS 250h will include a new system designed to improve efficiency. The exhaust heat recovery system reduces engine warm-up time, thus allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. A windshield with infrared-ray (IR) reduction properties, which helps keep the interior more cool, has been adopted in order to decrease the amount of air conditioning needed to lower the cabin temperature. In addition to the exhaust heat recovery system and the IR windshield, available power-saving LED headlamps also contribute to improved fuel efficiency and emissions.

here's the thing.... HID consume more power.... whether it comes from the battery or not compared to LEDs... even 40 LED mini size bulbs would still save power compared to HID... so yeah face it... it's more like a hybrid thing to get MPGs... and save power..

HIDs consume more power, but they still generate more output than LEDs. The LEDs in the LS600H have a total output of ~2000 lumens per side. Thats about 400 lumens per LED bulb. I have LEDs (some of the more efficient bulbs) with an output of 900 lumens and thats assuming I feed it 10w. That's about 90 lumens/watt, which is on par with the Philips D2S bulbs. The difference is that i can't put in more than 10w into the LED without overheating.
And good luck getting output from LED bulbs with high color rendering index. Most of the time, as you get down to the lower end of the color temperature, you have less output. It's not uncommon for a blue/white LED to have an output of 100 lumens, and then all of the sudden jumps down to 30 lumens just because the color is golden yellow. Had lexus put in 4100k LEDs, I think most people would have been disappointed with the output.
So essentially, you do save power with LEDs, but at the same time, you have less output.
And good luck getting output from LED bulbs with high color rendering index. Most of the time, as you get down to the lower end of the color temperature, you have less output. It's not uncommon for a blue/white LED to have an output of 100 lumens, and then all of the sudden jumps down to 30 lumens just because the color is golden yellow. Had lexus put in 4100k LEDs, I think most people would have been disappointed with the output.

I did not realize that the LED lights in the LS put out that little output
I think many people often have a misconception that LEDs are always brighter because of interior swaps, as with the 194/168 bulbs in the dash, license plate lights, dome lights, tail lights, etc.
