Default Optional rear tire size on the 18" IS Wheels

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. I've searched and haven't been able to find. We all know how limited we are in terms of selection when it comes to the OEM 18" matched set tires. Dropping the rear from a 255/40/18 to a 245/40/18 more than doubles the selection.

I've checked on 1010tires using their tire size calculator and the switch seems to be ok even though I'd be giving up a little width.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried this or can verify that I'm not likely to screw something up if I should do so.

As always, thanks, your insight is appreciated!

I just received an email response from Tire Rack. They say the car's electronics and suspension are set up for 255/40/18 and they recommend against chaning the size as it would be "short in diameter."

Can anyone confirm if there would issues? We're looking at a difference in diameter of less than 1/3 an inch.

Nothing to be gained by a different rear tire size.

You'll also increase the fender gap.

I went to a wider 265/40/18 and have had no problems. I thought that the wider tire might result in better traction vs the 255 stock.

Maybe, but offset by slower acceleration. Tire diameter will be larger, effect is like taller gearing.

Does anyone know what spacers will make the stock 255/40/18 tire size (and 225/40/18 for front) flush with the fenders?

20mm in the rear should make you flush

Thanks! Any brand you recommend? Also... just to make sure... the original bolts go from hub -> spacer, and I have to buy new bolts for spacer -> wheel?

Depends on the spacer you get. H&R spacers require that you swap out the wheel studs completely with the new ones that come with the spacers. There are a couple of brands (Ichiba and Kics I think) that have built-in studs, so install is a little easier.

^ Yes you can get either brand Ichiba or Kics that are bolt on. Ichiba is Type II spacers and Nigel, a vendor is selling them if you are looking to pick up a set. Really looks good and plants the car in the turns.

If you change the overall diameter of the wheel with a smaller tire, your traction control will go off...because its thinking that the wheel is rotating more so the tc will kick in! But if someone out there has done it already with no problems then try it! Anyone else wanna chime in?
