Default TPMS rebuild kit or NOT?

I ordered a set of Goodyear F1 All Season tires from America's Tire and am waiting for them to come in. They really tried to push me into letting them rebuild the TPMS sensors (@$7.50/wheel). They said it was a "mfr recommendation". I opted out, but it's not too late. Apparently, it can only be done while the tire is off. Should I reconsider?

from what I heard from a friend that works at discount tires, you're suppose to get it. I could be wrong though. that being said...I would probably be a good idea to get it done while the tires are off.

They install a kit. It has a new rubber seal (inside wheel - which is why it must be done with tire off) and the valve core. I guess the risk is that the seal may leak after time. I would think the valve core could be replaced at any time. I think I may skip it this time unless someone really knowledgeable chimes in. If it ain't broken . . . BTW, car has 25k on it.

I had my tires changed a few times and never had to "rebuild" the TPMS sensors. However, with new rims and second set of TPMS, you will need to have the kit. I have no idea how long the seals are supposed to last.

the TMPS rebuild kit is just... taking those TPMS kits on your current wheels and putting it on your new wheels... the catch is that it needs to be tires off because to install your TPMS... there are some rubber that has to be re fastened thats all actually.. and if you want no lights on your dash.. thats what you should do... correct me if i'm wrong in any parts ;D

Possibly . . . but I'm not changing rims. Theoretically, they shouldn't be touching the sensors other than through the valves by putting air back into the tires after mounting. I think their point is that the rubber seal (on inside of the rim) starts leaking over "time". No one says what that time is. I think it's the TPMS version of putting new valve stems in a rim. Since they can't put new valve stems in, they rebuild the TPMS.

I changed my rims.. they mounted the tires.... it was rubbing.. they unmounted n changed the tires only.. and i think i was given a new valve stem.. n the whole valve actually.. i agree most probably is just the rubber.... well... i think it's better to go with it.. its 7.50 each anyway.. rather than risking it? it's an expensive car.. and if lets say you don't and u decide to put it on later.. think the labor.. gonna cost at least another $20+ each... so why not?

When I had my rims installed I bought some used TMPS off a member here. So far (4-5 months) I haven't had any problems. After the dealer programed the car to accept the new sensors, the tire light hasn't come on once.

bottom line is if anything happen down the line then you'll have to pay extra labor on top of the 7.50/each for the rebuilt kit.

Wrong, rebuilding according to the OP was to replace the seals on the TPMS.

Skip it, @ $7.50 each they are just replacing the rubber seal, not the valve itself... that would cost them $$$. They shouldn't even touch the valve assembly other then to remove the valve part that lets air in and out (thats replaced regardless) because all your doing is changing tires.

Glad everything worked out for you!

I've had my light come on a few times, but that was due to temp. drops... so I know mine are working. lol
