Theoretically you should be able to buy and install both the Inner & Outer 08' taillights onto an 09'...
.. as long as all the harnesses are exactly the same..
If you did just the 08' outer housings it won't match or line up to the 09' inner trunk lid housings... aesthetically speaking of course..

p.s. - I'm having a drink...

I like my tails
I guess I am the only one who doesn't think the 2009 tails are a travesty. I have even gotten compliments on them. I do agree that some red outs would make them look better. I plan on installing some when I find out where to get them.
For some reason the changes to the rear of the 09, both to the tails and the black trim on the bottom of the bumper, give it a wider appearance (IMO) which isn't a bad thing.
Anyway I have the 09 and look at it every day and can't find too much fault if any in the new changes, it looks MUCH better in person than in pics.

I don't think the 09 tails are as bad as people are saying. Stock 06-08 without any redouts doesn't look the best either, but with redouts they look pretty nice. IS-F seems to be hit and miss with a lot of people. I personally like them.
09's also light up differently than the older tails, a side by side comparison would be nice too bad there arent many 09's out there yet

This is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if it has to do with improved airflow around the back of the car?
Remember, when the 2IS came out for '06 they said the reason for the 'dip' in the top of the taillights was for airflow or keeping the rear of the car less dirty or something like that. (Someone can probably dig to find this). Perhaps they've learned a few things in the windtunnel while working on the IS-F?
Again, pure speculation.

when doing PDI's on the 09's the tails were kinda growing on me.. still disgusted by the rims but i guess the tails doo need redouts for the upright rectangled amber part.. as i look at it more and more throughout the days... i'm not feeling it at all anymore lol but the front end is a + i wonder what kinda lip kits are gonna come out for it

I was behind an 09 on my way to work the other day, and I can't believe that the tail lights look like that....yuck...they do have a weird look. If you can't afford IS-F tails for your 06-08, redouts will look just as good.

Joe Z... thanks for the pics (and the credit, ha).
It's definitely clear, as I had mentioned before... that the buldge on the bottom and sides is ridiculous, and totally kills the sleek lines of the rear of the car.
It's one thing to have the ugly redesign of the reverse light being a huge Nike-swoosh thing, and the turn signals being huge and strangely verticle. But to have all of that sticking out from the body of the car, now? What were they thinking?
You know the Infinity SUV... I think it's called the FX? It reminds me of that. Or the new Camry. Very tacky, almost cheap aftermarket design.

more like...the ES350s i'd have to definitely agree with you on ALL of these points. glad i picked up an '08, the front bumper would've been sweet though, then again, a gfx kit for it wouldn't have been as cheap
the redesign of the wheels...i was very sad to see. it just made my '08 stock wheels jump up in value
