Question HID Conversion Kits and Warranty.

Planning to order a HID conversion kit soon from XenonDepot...but since some of the DIYs I've seen require sawing a 1" hole, would that affect my warranty in any way? Would installing an aftermarket HID kit affect my warranty in any way and should I change it back to halogens when I take my car in for service?

Installing an HID conversion kit (not just swapping out bulbs, but going from Halogen to HID) will void the warranty on your headlights. Your stock headlights are waranteed, not your aftermarket replacements. The only warranty you'll have is whatever the manufacturer of the kit you purchase will provide.

That means, any wiring problems... you are on your own. UNLESS, you remove the "HID kit" and put the stock bulbs back in and then bring it in. The hole is not necessary, its just to make it clean. What I did (rig) was just push as hard as I could on the cover to close it and it snapped right in. If I were to do it again, I would drill the hole so its clean.

BTW!!! Make sure you run a relay wiring harness so prevent any problems with the stock wiring.

I just ordered a kit from xenondepot yesterday.I don't know if sawing is the correct word. You must make a hole in the plastic dust cover for the wire to come through. Then seal with a grommet or silicone.
Unlike the MTEC,the xtreme kit comes with a relay and line to the battery to stop any load on the headlight harness which could be a problem over time without the line to the battery.

The MTEC kit sounds like it has the correct wiring kit that comes with it. But if you are going to pay $2XX for a kit... I would hope it comes with a wiring kit. Wiring kit alone is like 30-50 bucks! I believe either way a hole has to be made in the dust cover.

BTW of all the years I've been dealing with HIDs I have never seen any kits mess up stock wiring at all.

The MTEC kit powers the ballasts directly from the OEM headlight harness. From the pictures I have seen, the connection to the OEM h11 headlight harness is via 2 spade connectors. Our product will come with a relay harness that powers the ballasts directly from the battery. The connection to your OEM headlight harness will be via a proper H11 mating connector (not just 2 spade connectors).

The MTEC does come with two spade connectors. That's typical of electrical connections (ever looked at an electrical plug you put into a wall socket? That has two spade connectors too). The MTEC kits also come with an H11 plastic plug that you lock the spade connectors into. I believe the reason why they do this is because of the comments people in this forum have made about how + becomes - and vice versa. Since the H11 plug is unidirectional (you can only connect it one way, flipping it upside down won't work), it allows you to test the connection to make sure the lights work before you make it permanent. Other people installing kits on this forum had to shave down one of the plugs to connect + with - and - with +.

That being said, the MTECs don't come with a relay harness to the battery. They also seem to light perfectly fine without any electrical issues. I read somewhere else here that a mechanic's been installing aftermarket HIDs all the time without the relay harnesses and doesn't have problems, especially on newer cars.

To answer the OP, it varies from kit to kit. I think the MTECs are two years.
