Default 2 mile short commute

I live about 2 miles from work. Do you think it's bad for the modern engine? Should I change the oil more often, because I think the engine needs to run nice and hot to run burn off condensation in the block.

most ECM initially runs open loop until coolant temp is warm enough.. plus fuel enrichment based on coolant temperature, so just one conclusion -- it runs very rich before fully warmed up.

I go home for lunch so usually back and forth 8 miles a day. The subsequent trips are usually a little warm already.. But of course I go to other places which are like 10-30 miles away, just not everyday. Anyone else with a short commute?

I don't know about your engine, but I know it's not good for your battery.

Why not walk or bike? Seriously, that maybe a healthy proposition for both you and the car. If you still drive, I would agree that you should change oil a bit more frequently. Say around 3k instead of 5k.

Or a pair of comfortable sneakers costing 70+ every 6 months.

Wow seriously... If I only had two miles to get to work and it was a place I thought Id be working at for years to come, I would have bought a two seater sports car for the weekends and after work fun and got a nice bike (maybe a motorcycle) and used that to get to and from work!

I would spend $20 for a blackstone lab analysis.

It's ok, your car will not self destruct from short trips. Get the oil changed every 6 months rather than waiting to 5k miles, and you'll be fine.

I'm going through the same thing - I commute exactly 1 mile to work. Why don't I walk? 2 reasons: 1) I wear a suit and tie to work everyday, and I don't feel like reeking of sweat by the time I get to work (summer has been very hot so far in Pasadena, CA), and 2) It's a 5 minute drive versus a half-hour walk. This type of use (frequent short trips of less than 5 miles) qualifies as 'extreme use' for an engine, but if you take care of it, you'll be fine. You can change your oil more frequently if you like, but I just posted a Blackstone used oil analysis where I went 10,000 miles before changing my oil and everything came back great. In fact, they told me to stay at a 10,000 mile OCI. Don't worry, your engine will be fine. I agree with al503 though - spend the money on a Blackstone UOA to make sure...

This is why we americans are so FAT, 2mi from work but we'll drive... Drive our fat kids to the bus stop, like on that show fat america *something*. Get a bike. I walk to work, 1.5meters from the kitchen door to the workshop.

Speak for yourself - I'm not fat...

Also, let's try to stay on topic, guys - OP is asking about the potential harm to his engine from having such a short commute - not whether he's lazy or fat or whatever...
