It's the fob buttons...
Tried this a few times, carefully holding both the door handle inner release and the outer door lock buttons—finally gave up, deciding it must've been changed by 2013. Falling asleep that night, I thought, hmm, maybe it's the fob buttons people are talking about. Success! I never think of the fob, it just needs to be in my pocket. Great tip, thanks!
