Default 10K Service - Cost?

Brought my IS250 AWD in for the 10K service. The dealer has a board on the wall with prices for different services, oil change is $60 and $47 to rotate the tires. The service manager hands me the key to the loaner car (GFM IS250 AWD-very nice color) and a invoice for $140.

Even without my calculator, this seemed a bit high to me. So I asked why am I being charged $140 for the service when an oil change and tire rotation is $107. The service writer pauses, stammers a bit and then says well they do other things--like what--well they check the air in your tires and top off your fluids, and check your brake pads.

Okay, in that case, then skip the 10k service and just change the oil and rotate the tires. I think my brake pads are okay at 10k miles and I just checked the air in my tires. So he crosses of the $140 and writes in the $107--still too much but less egregious.

I'm curious to hear what others have paid for their 10k service?

I see it listed as $144.

Doesn't the 10k service also include changing the cabin pollen filter? I think that's about a $30-$35 part. Probably the difference between the $107 you paid for the oil change and rotation, versus the $140 that they were originally going to charge for the full 10k service.

Pollen filter at 10k? I hope not. I believe that's a 30k item on my Acura and even then it may not need it. 10k wouldn't even be a year old for me.

If you check the maintenance schedule for 10k, there really isn't much there other than the oil change (nothing you or a backyard mechanic can't do). As others have done, I took my 350 to an Express Lube at a Toyota dealership AND they do an 11 point inspection - $36 OTD.

btw, I was told by one Lexus advisor that I had to rotate my tires (staggered setup).

I had my 10k done a few months back and it was around $100. When I dropped the car off the walk light had just come on and when I pick it up I had a full tank of gas. So I figure the 10k was around $60

$110. I'll be scheduling just the oil change for $60. They don't rotate staggard/directional tires and nothing better go wrong on this car till after 30k miles---even the stupid pollen filter. Replace the filter at 10k??? My car is 3 months old not 2 years old like the old lady down the street that drives her Lexus to Bingo and back once a week.

I speak from experience owning several brand new cars when I say that the first time I will take my car to a dealership/shop for non-warranty service will be between 60k to 100k miles for brakes, coolant, etc... Anything sooner is a waste of money.

As far as maintenance before 60k or so, I'll have the oil changed by a local shop I trust every 10k to 15k miles, and the rest I can do myself (engine filter, ac filter, wiper blades, etc...) in just a few minutes when the time comes each year.

Not only will this save me money, not only will it save me from having to drive loaner cars, MOST INPORTANTLY it will result in no stupid crap (like scratches, chips, dealer taking my car for a joy ride, etc.) happening to my car by incompetent people at the dealership.

.
Geesh, I wish our Toyota dealerships in the states had Express lubes in them? I'm not sure any Quick Lubes here have the parts to change an oil filter. Anyone know otherwise from experience?

Star Toyota in the Houston area DOES have an Express Lube shop. It $20 and 15 mintues... however they usually have so many people waiting that it's closer to 45 on a Saturday.

I used to take my Camry there all the time. They'd check all the fluids and rotate my tires (for a few extra bucks).

I'm lost when people keep saying an oil change for $60... that is just absurd. It shouldn't cost more than $15-$20.

Well not really, maybe more like $25-30. Keep in mind that the filter is an element type and not the all-in-one cannister that you can get off the shelf. Also, the IS takes 7+ qts and not 4.5 like some of the other J-spec imports . . .

60k on a set of brakes? You must never stop.
