Default Much to BMW and Mercedes chagrin, the new Lexus IS-series sales are on fire!

For my personal selfish ways... I dont like this news being I like exclusive things... but I gotta admit I was jumping for joy when I read this...

Here's what I predicted for the new Lexus IS-series last September...

Agent001 submitted on 09/29/2005 Official Bell & Ross Timestamp: 11:51 PM

No matter what the pundits say (That it is still not as good as a 3-series), AutoSpies.com predicts that within twelve months of its release, the competitors will be wondering what hit them...

It's better looking than the new 3-series or C-Class, fit/finish is outstanding and its performance is excellent.

The unit forecast is over 40k for the first year.

That's more than three times what they sold last year.

And anyone in the car business knows that if you're an executive and you forecast units, you'd BETTER make the number, or you're HISTORY.

All auto execs are famous for being ultra conservative when they forecast (it's called protecting your rear!)so this kind of swagger is unheard of, unless you're POSITIVE you have a winner.

Common sense tells me that if they make the forecast (and we predict they will), then those extra sales gotta come from somewhere.

And that somewhere is from BMW and Mercedes dealerships.

Get ready to see some bloodshed...

And here's what has happened even after all the pundits said I would be wrong...

The new Lexus IS-series is not only on target to meet the initial forecast of 40k units, it's poised to EXCEED it by 40%!!!!

So far this year they have sold 37,347 units.

Based on an average of 4,668 units per month so far, they are poised to sell 56,020 units by the end of the year which would be an increase of 40% over the original forecast!!!

DAMN. That's a lot of cars. Somehow I think that's still way less than BMW's number though. Anyone know how many 3ers were sold?

8,800 vs. 5,500, 3-series vs. IS. Meanwhile the C-class is now 4,600.

But note the IS is just 3 models while the 3-series includes coupe and other variants.

Wait till the IS models increase. Already the current 3 models are doing great!

The IS series is a smash success for Lexus!

That's actually funny.

Consider the fact that 325i, 325xi, 330i combine to outsell IS250, IS250 AWD, and IS350. 6092 vs 5553.

3 has outsold IS every single month. In addition, considering that the BWM is down in month of august for annual summer break that cuts back on the east cost sales. It still beats IS.

Have you actually look at the numbers?

What I am more curious about is... how are the 3 series numbers compared to last year?

Do you think BMW is worried about the IS with those numbers? Last year, the BMW 325i, 325xi and 330i out sold the IS300... probably 10:1 or 1000%(someone correct these, since I am just guessing). Now its a 52% /48% race. (325, 325xi, 330i vs IS250, IS250Awd, IS350)

I would be pooping in my pants if I saw my 10:1 margin fall to 1.1:1

The 3 series sales is up 16.7% year over year.

The number is also skewed since july and august are typical slow month for BMW as it begin its summer long vacation. The 06 E90 actually ended production in late july and 07 will not begin production until next week (due to E92 launch).

Side by side, the 3 model of three generally sale between 7 to 8k unit per month, while IS typically sales about 4-5k a month.

The E90 has easily outsold E46 as well. IS is indeed taking sales away from mercedes but not from BMW. As BMW 3 has pretty much dominated this segment, this holds true for the 5 series as well.

Default Is this the IS or 3 series forum?

It seems like the IS owners are a bunch of second stringers, as if we got the second place car behind the 3 Series. Even when someone gives props for a car that went from selling around 5000/year to one selling 5000/month, there are still gripes. Lexus never claimed to overtake the 3 series sales, if so they would have proclaimed 100,000 units. Instead of saying this car came a long way from where it started, there's praise for BMW selling more cars. Back in 2001 I bought a 325 Ci and never even looked at the IS 300. Fastforward, 2006, the IS 350 trumped the 330 and no regrets. Don't respond proclaiming the twin turbo 335. Look at all the technology Lexus put into a 6 cylinder that achieves over 300 horsepower and still gets descent fuel economy without turbo chargers. In 4 years when it's time for another car, I don't know who will win my money, but for now I'm a proud Lexus owner.

Well said. It's ridiculous to claim that the IS should be expected to destroy 3 series sales. The point is, Lexus now has a foothold in the entry sports luxury segment; each IS sale is another less sale that could have happened to any of the entry sports luxury makes. Of course, there's room for all players here, but the IS has taken a fair share.

How many 1IS were sold the first year it came out?

There's no way the Lexus 2IS would overtake BMW's bread-and-butter 3 series. The Lexus RX on the other hand...

1, Autospies is pathetic.
2. THeir title is just to start a flame war on their forum, so lets not do it here
3. The IS is a sales success yes, BMW and Benz will be A-okay, trust me
4. It proves this is a WIN-WIN situation for consumers and the automakers

It is SO TIRING that b/c one is good, the other has to be bad. BULLCRAP. THe 30-40k segment is a very impressive one with incrdible cars from almost every car maker.
