Because a manual gearbox that handles 200hp is not the same as one for 300hp. Lexus obviously doesn't have a manual tranny that can handle 300+ hp and doesn't care to dip into TRD to try and develop one. Case study: Acura CL/TL 5sp auto - don't you have a friend or relative that had to have their tranny replaced by Honda/Acura ??? The reason, Acura foolishly thought they could take the same tranny from an Accord (apprx 160hp) and attach it to a 240+hp V6 motor. Look at what that Silliness cost the company in terms of goodwill and owner loyalty . . .

Then, by the same logic, why do they build a manual version of the IS250? It probably sells about 2000 units per year.
Is the IS250 manual tranny shared with a lot of other Toyotas?

I personally had the tranny go on my 2003 Acura TL Type S after owning the car for about 15 months. And they put rebuilts of questionable quality in the cars, my mileage and performance dropped dramatically after they swapped it, original mileage ranged from 26-30mpg, post tranny swap highest I was able to get was 20mpg.
So Acura lost my business and now here I sit with my new IS350, happy as a clam!

Actually what's the relationship between all these things and how do they all work together?
I gather it's a hierarchy like:
VDIM (high level catch all)
-VSC (Vehicle stability control? Is this a yaw sensor thing?)
-ABS (Anti-lock breaks obv.)
-BA ?
-TRAC (Wheel spin?)
So when I do the pedal dance, what am I actually doing? what am I disabling?

MT on IS250 to stay?
Hi, I'm new to the forum.
I've been reading the posts about the hope for a MT on the IS350. But does anyone know for sure if the 2007 model year will have a MT option on the IS250?
I'm cross-shopping the IS250 with the TL and TSX, and I think I'm liking the IS the best. I'm getting a little concerned though, because of the apparent lack of interest in the MT. I can't even find a single one in Oregon to test drive!
Do you think there is a possibility that Lexus will drop the MT altogether? Man, I hope not!

As you can see, they only shipped 37 manual tranny's to the Eastern region for the month of August, so they're here but scarce. You may have to place a special order like me.

BMW and M-B and Volvo et. al sell tons of cars in Europe, and Europeans dont buy Automatics. Therefore, they've already made them and they can sell them here for little cost added.
BMW (and other German automakers) can absorb these costs because they know they can sell manual trannies due to their performance reputation.
Lexus may not want to absorb these costs because they sell cars for their comfort and ease of use, not because of their performance reputation.
M.B. may not want to absorb these costs for the luxury >> performance attitude. Also, they have other issues to deal with, such as reliability and technology problems, which may supercede the need to spend $$ on developing manual transmissions for their higher end vehicles.
If Lexus does plan to develop a well-developed manual, it will be for something that will be solely performance >> luxury oriented, such as the LF-A, or perhaps a true SC Sports Coupe (not a cruiser such as the one currently being offered). It is still possible to create a manual IS, but expect such a vehicle to be made significantly different from the current IS in terms of materials and technology used.

While the European market probably has more manuals than automatics, they also buy smaller engine cars more than ones heavy on HP. Hence why the manual is on the IS250 and the IS220d (Europeans also prefer diesel). Seeing how that base is covered, Lexus probably thinks it has no real need to develop a new manual to handle the HP/torque of the IS350 since it wouldn't sell much in the European or American markets (unless I have my generalization of Europe completely wrong).
