Default Tire Pressure Monitoring System

I will be replacing a damaged wheel and tire this weekend for another OEM wheel. My car has the tire pressure monitoring system, and I was wondering (1) how this system works, and (2) what I need to do for the new wheel and tire to make the tire pressure system work properly?

I seem to recall that the pressure sensor is in the valve stem. If this is true, can the valve stem be swapped from my damaged wheel to the new wheel?

Thanks in advanve for any input.

As long as the sensor is not damaged you can swap it into the new wheel.

Thanks for the replies.

Am I correct in assuming that the pressure sensor is part of the valve stem assembly, and that it simply bolts or screws into the wheel?

Yes, pressure sensor is push trought the rim and a nut is screwed on from outside to be secured.
As long as the sensor is not damaged, and it will be in same wheel position as the old one was, it will be fine.

Great info, thank you for the reply. The sensor is working fine so the swap should be straight forward.

I don't think it matters what wheel position it is in. If it were, rotating the tires (on cars w/o staggered wheels, e.g. IS 250 AWD), would be a dealer only operation.

Update.

The local tire shop installed a new Dunlop SP Sport 5000M tire on the "new" rim I purchased on eBay. However, the shop could not swap the tire pressure sensor because new seals are required (or so the owner says). Seems logical to me, since a seal is needed to keep the air pressure up. Since this is a dealer item, the tire shop told me to have the dealer install the sensor.

In the meantime, he installed a regular $2 valve stem. The monitoring system doesn't seem to know the differnece. Depending on the cost for installing the sensor at the dealer, I may just wait until I get new tires before I transfer the pressure sensor. The whole tire pressure monitoring system is a bit of a PITA if you ask me. In theory, tire shops would not be able to swap sensors without getting seals from the dealers -- which begs the question why go to a tire shop at all for tires if you have this monitoring system. Instead, go to the dealer and get everything taken care of in one visit.
