Question Fuel Capacity?

I have noticed that my IS 350 still has a theoretical 1.9 gallons of fuel left in the tank when the display says that my tank is empty and I have no miles left to go. Has any one determined just how much usable fuel is still in the gas tank when the fuel gage reads empty with zero miles remaining on the display?

I know you want to find out how much fuel is left in reserve, but try not to get down that far into your fuel supply - it's not good for your fuel pump. I also see that you, like me, live in Cali - ESPECIALLY over here, you want to try to maintain at least a half a tank in case the big one comes along...

The big one? You mean the the $4.00 mark for premium gas??? because that would be as catastrophic as an earthquake at this point.

I decided to let my tank go down to 3 miles to go. The fill up too exactly 15 gallons. That means there was 2 gallons left in the tank. I must remember to not tell my girlfriend that little tidbit. If she knows there is gas left, she will run it dry!

I just pumped my gas today, $50, 14 gallons, noticed the indicator turned on at the tick before the E(mpty). All cars I've driven before, the indicator appears at or past the E. Thought that was weird.

Another oddity, I drove 362 miles, doing the math, I actually averaged 25.8 miles / gallon, but
the car readout was 22.7

My 4Runner can't get at the last gallon of gas. Unfortunately I've found that out several times due to guage problems. 100K miles on the pump with no ill effects BTW. So that is my completely unrelated guess. It appears to me that the IS has two gas tanks linked somehow. One under each rear seat.

Oh, also in case anyone is interested, the Average mileage and Average speed can both be reset by displaying them on the dash and holding down the trip reset button. Read that the other night but haven't tried it.

if you guys try to rely on the gasoline gauge for scientific information, it's going to let you down.

Thanks Lars. I haven't read that far in the manual yet (if you read that there) but I have been wondering about it. That would definately be cool to have on trips.

interesting, I can't seem to get more than 21.5 for tank average in the indicator. Damn lead foot. But I will try doing the math manually. Thanks.

Just picked up my 350 on Tuesday. Current Tank Avg is 16.9MPG. Can you tell I'm having too much fun right now? The information in this thread is good to hear.

Approximately 2 gallons left when range nears 0. Good stuff.

readout is not acurate. You will have to do the math manual and I always do. I do not know why someone was able to get above 25 mpg since I only get around 22-23mpg (manual calculation). I guess that I must drive too fast on the freeway.

One time, I added about another 20 to 30 miles after the display showed that I had no miles to go. The most that I got at the pump was 16 gallons (with a comp free tank of gas ).
