I actually like the squiggly shifter. I often have to find my self looking down to make sure I am in the right position in my sister's e46; I much prefer the squiggly lines because you know intuitively where you are without having to look down.

Really? I guess its a matter of getting use to... I have to look down or look at the dash for the IS but other autobox BMWs that I've driven you just pull it all the way down to the bottom and its in D. Its the same for the E46. Slap it over to the left and you're in manual shift mode. Up two notches and in reverse... no need to move left or right and go through a maze to get to D or R
The steering wheels in the 2006 GS, 2007 ES, and 2007 LS all look better than the one in the 2006 IS IMO. The shape of the steering wheel in the 2006 IS looks funny IMO. Also, jcreech I was just stating my opinion so don't get all defensive and bent out of shape about it.

I see where you're coming from. My e46 is way old school and still goes PRND432, so more often than not I end up around 4 or 3 than in D. Plus, when I'm doing some really pressured tight U-turn maneuvers and have to back up again, I'll push the lever all the way to P again... or have to look down to make sure i'm in R. It's sort of a pain.
