Default Problems with rain sensing wipers

Just wondering how your rain sensing wipers are working. Mine don't very work very well, and sometimes not at all. I did put aquapel on the windshield the day I bought it, and now I'm wondering if that is causing a problem of the system not recognizing that it's raining.

Any feedback appreciated.

Im not sure if its in the manual but I was told that putting something like rainx on the windshield would definitely affect the performance of the sensors.

i use rainX. Right after I apply it the water beads off so well that the sensor does not detect it. This doesnt bother me. After a while the wipers work just fine and dandy. I really recommend rainX to all of you. I use it on all the windows. It will rain and no water even touches the windows.

does anyone know how "rain sensing wipers" actually work and why rain x or aquapel would screw it up?

I thought the windows were already water repellent. Does rainX make them more water repellent?

The sensor in the box by the rear view mirror looks down the windshield for the refraction of light the water droplets cause. When it finds that it swipes the wipers.

I apply a fresh coat every few weeks and never use my wipers.

If you've never tired Aquapel you should. I highly recommend it. It's more expensive than Rain-X initially, but it works much better and lasts up to 6 months with only one treatment. So in the end it ends up being cheaper.

Do you find with RainX that it increases the glare of headlights? I stopped using it because of that problem.

I can't comment on Rain-x, but Aquapel doesn't.

I just called the service department where I bought my car. The tech said that Rain-X or Aquapel should have no effect on wiper performance. He said that they've had many complaints from people that find the wiper system very poor. He also said that Lexus is working on a fix for the problem, and it would be covered under warranty. I'll post more info if as I get it.

I've always hated rain sensing wipers... I'll take speed variable intermitant manual style over rain sensing anyday...

Well if the system worked properly I would really love it. But right now I'm really missing the old school intermittent settings.

I also find that even with the sensitivity cranked all the way up they don't work very well.
