Independent IT consultant specializing in enterprise systems architecture (software and infrastructure), mostly for Fortune 500 clients. Looks like there are quite a few of us techies on this board. =)

WHAT DOES A PERFUSIONIST DO?
Working as a Perfusionist (also known as Clinical Perfusion Scientists)
Medical Technical Officers (MTOs) working in Perfusion (the passage of fluid through tissue) are known as Perfusionists or Clinical Perfusion Scientists and are members of the open-heart surgery team who are mainly responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine.
The perfusionist uses a number of highly technical, mechanical and electronic devices to ensure that oxygen reaches a patients body through the blood, even when the patients lungs and heart are temporarily not functioning. and controlling the machinery which temporarily takes over a patients respiratory (breathing) and/or circulation of blood during open-heart surgery.
