It sounds like you don't have a good speed connection. If the nav unit can see the speed, it will not allow you to program a destination while moving. (So when you could program it in motion, it had no speed signal at all).

You would also have had jumpy nav response.

That's correct, just make sure that both sides are insulated. If either side of the cut wires contacts ground you will have problems. Car side will trick the car into thinking it is moving, and you will have trouble shutting the car off - NAV side and it will believe you are still moving - without a real signal - so you won't be able to program the nav in motion plus it will be jumpy.

Wouldn't a better way to insert a switch that:
- would completely disconnect the NAV from the motion sensor, but in this way enabling you to use the nav functions at 100% (eg. enter destinations)
OR
- leave the NAV connected to the motion sensor for normal usage (95% of time, when you don't need to enter destinations while in motion)

More: given that you're already opening up the car for the NAV hack, maybe you're even interested in the 'Back Camera hack' at this link:

And in the same post for a pdf of the NAV wiring diagram:

When you ground the red wire (I have Nav w/ML) do you ground the wire loom side or the plug side? My dvd works until I let go of the foot break. Before, it would stop working once I put the car in reverse. I know I am close but could use some help.

Plug side, you will also need to hack the speed signal as well. The multidisplay uses both signals in order to determine whether or not it can display DVD video.

With just the speed signal hack, you get MP3 folder navigation, Phone Dialing, and Phonebook. (I think there may be some additional things as well).

If you only ground the plug side of the red wire (parking brake hack only). you get nothing.

Default Would this work?

http://www.coastaletech.com/nav_kit.htm

Someone suggested it would work on the GS models and since it works on Prius?

It works on the GS because the GS navigation system is the 4th Gen model, same as the Prius ones.

So no dice on the IS250/350? Man if that thing let you play dvds while in motion, I'd buy it! I hate the idea of splicing wires!?

no the hack wouldn't work and if you were to hack a piece of equipment that later went bad, the warranty would most likely be void on that particular piece of equipment.

edit: for clarification
