Default Does your car do that?

Hi, so say you're driving down a hill going 50-60 mph and the car is in 6 gear overdrive just coasting. If I press the breaks on mine, it automatically shifts down to 4th gear and stays there. It only does it if I'm going downhill.

Sound familiar or only mine does it? Thanks guys.

Yes, car is using the engine to assist with braking while going downhill.

Yes it does. People who drive manual transmission cars do the same to regulate their speed if necessary instead of riding their brakes.

Even when you are going down a really steep hill with a rather low speed limit ?

yes, my car does this too. It's sorta annoying because the gear change is kinda jarring

haha...I usually do that too. Especially if you are behind someone. I have found that the only time I realy downshift to slow down is in the snow and ice for more control. Other than that for lights and stop signs I'm usually in nuetral.

Mine does it too. Like you said, it's a little jarring. I couldn't quite find out the circumstances it was occurring, because it's intermittent. I've been searching for a couple days to find out if it was normal, too. Glad I'm not the only one who is experiencing this and glad to see that it's normal.

Love the feeling of going downhill like that and having no worries other than riding the breaks
