temporary knocking noise immediately after engine start - IS250
Hey guys, I have been getting a knocking/clanking type noise intermittently immediately after starting my motor for the past 5K miles or so. Initially I have ignored it but it went from once in every 10-20 starts to 2 out of 3 starts. It goes away after a second and the car appears to run fine. I run Mobil 1 oil. I don't know if the rapid increase in the noise occurrence has anything to do with the hotter weather or if whatever is causing it is deteriorating exponentially. Any advice on how to troubleshoot/repair? I am guessing it might be the cam gears or mechanical fuel pump. The car has 78K miles on it and the water pump was replaced at 50K.

I have a similar issue too. But it makes the sound only after I shut off the vehicle. It makes this like knocking noise once every 2-3 seconds repeatedly and I just noticed it today because I had wait in my car. Just started happening recently but I just got a message saying I need to change my oil soon so maybe it's related? Idk

Yes, the hot weather has a factor in this AND so does how you park you car. If able, park with the nose pointed downhill. The noise comes from lack of lubication on the cam gear weights and they clunk about the first couple seconds until more oil is introduced to them. Also, in my IS350, the noise happened more enough as I neared the end of my oil change cycle.
Hope Lexus does a recall for the IS250s here soon!

Thanks for the responses. I initially posted that the frequency of the startup rattling noise increased dramatically over a fairly short period of time but that has changed recently. Now my car makes the noise like it was before... maybe 1 out of every 10-20 starts. Should the cam gears be replaced? What are the consequences of leaving it as-is? I plan on putting 250K miles on the car. It currently has 79K. I don't mind doing the work but if the noise will just come back again in 75K I might as well just live with is as long as possible. I'm looking at $6-700 in parts.
