Default Black Out Window Trim Project

After doing some research in this forum I tried two methods of blacking out my window trim. The first product I used was Plasti Dip. The second was 3M Scotchprint 1080 gloss black vinyl.

I decided to post some pictures of my endeavors so you can make a comparison and decide for yourself which route you would like to go if any of you are thinking of doing the same thing.

I didn't like the way the color looked against the gloss black paint of my IS. The texture was also a bit too rough. I found that it peeled pretty easily after just one window cleaning so I decided to remove it.

On to vinyl I go...I chose to use 3M Scotchprint 1080 gloss black for the window trim, grill, and mirrors. The pictures below are my finished results.

I am very pleased with the way the vinyl turned out. I applied the vinyl with the trim still on the car. It was very helpful to have the correct tools such as a heat gun and a felt covered squeegee. The gloss black vinyl is a pretty close match to the paint. The real test will be how it holds up over time. I will keep you all posted about its durability.

Good job! i had my grille surround vinyl wrapped and it held up well through all conditions for a long period of time. I just recently removed it cause i wanted to go back to the chrome. It was showing no signs of peeling off, and I have to agree it matches well. Im not a fan of platidip, its too dull and looks cheap. I put it on my emblems and peeled it right after, but thats just my opinion of course.

Nice post. I definitely like the vinyl better also. How much was spend on the vinyl and how long did it take you?

good choice with the vinyl. I don't understand this whole plasti-dip craze. I think it looks cheap

This looks VERY clean, and much better than the contrast that you had with the flat black of the plasti dip. Looks great!

I bought a 60"x60" piece of vinyl for $80 at Auto Vinyl Solutions. Based on the drawing below the current layout gave me a few chances to get it right. The rear window has to be covered with one piece so you don't have any seams. Because of this you will need a rectangle at least 18" x42". I took some large format paper, taped it to my car and traced the dimensions of the trim with a pencil and cut it out. I used this for my template when I cut the vinyl pieces. You will also need two 2.5" x 52" strips for each door. If you are a vinyl master you could save some money and get a 48"x60" sheet. It took me 10 hours because I am meticulous and made a few errors. I already had the strips and rear window shapes cut out so I am not including prep time. If you are highly skilled you could finish the job in 3-6 hours with everything cut out and ready to go.
