After reviewing the pics again the sheer amount of grease slung around really does appear to be a boot failure. If you have no negative noises right now, I'd just clean the area thoroughly and roll on. After a while (could be > a year of time really) you'll start to hear clicks from the CV joint in that axle. Definitely time to replace once that noise starts.

Wish you luck on the final diagnosis though.

Due to the very little angle change on the rear axles (no steering), even without grease, it will take a LONG time before they start to make any noises from my experience. Front CV shafts will wear a lot quicker than rears.

Still sucks. :\

Here's a good chance to save a few bucks (if you end up going this route), or see what the rear knuckle looks like off the car as a whole assembly :

Please verify that the 250 and 350 rear knuckles/hubs are the same before purchasing.

powertrain warranty is 6 years or 70,000 miles.

So he'd be just out of warranty by 1 mile.

Close enough it'd be worth speaking to the dealer/Lexus about if it's a covered part.

Problem diagnosed.

Axle was leaking from within the silver collar piece. There’s a press-fit joint in there were two metal parts meet and grease was seeping through that joint. Mechanic is cleaning it up and putting epoxy in there to seal the joint back up. Will just keep driving until the axles start to go bad, if they ever do.

So any updates? Did the epoxy hold or cut down on the grease? If so what kind of epoxy did you use? And did you have to take the axle shaft apart to apply the epoxy? I'm pretty certain that I have the same issue. I was thinking about ordering (low mileage) used replacement parts but wasn't sure if I should order the hub or just the Rear axle shaft. Would I need to order both? The rear axle shaft is around a GRAND for each side!!! I was not able to find any aftermarket replacements. The rear Hub however isn't so bad. I can find that for around 2-300 for the pair. Thanks in advance!
