Default Cracked Cyliner. What now?

Thanks in advance for any response. I own a 2001 IS which I have put 304k milles on and it just broke down a couple days ago. Mechanic said the engine is shot. I am seeking advice on what to do now rather than taking the car to a junk yard for salvage value. Everything was running fine except for burning oil before the engine blew and the body and interior are in decent shape. I am not really interested in putting a new engine in the car as it has 300k on the transmission. What would be the value of the car without a motor? Any recommendations as far as selling or parting out?

Your best bet is to drop a used engine in it and then sell it. However, if you don't want to do that, I would just sell it as is - hopefully to someone looking for a good shell. Parting out can be and usually is a PITA.

What do you want for the car?

Without a running engine and with 300k on the chassis / transmission, its not worth much...

holy ****, over 300k on an 01, that is awesome!

depends on how far the crack is. you can do a few things with a crack:
1, weld the crack.
2, overbore the cylinder (crack is probably too big for this.
3, overbore the cylinder and sleeve it.

Would be cheaper, easier and more reliable to source a good used block...

labor unless you are doing it yourself will be ridiculous... $3000-$4000 easy...

oh i completely agree. i have a habit of speaking from a 'diy standpoint.'

but i was also just giving knowledge as to if/how a crack in the block COULD be fixed/repaired.

01 w/300K+blown motor value worth less than 1K, though you have options. The front end is worth that much, so if you have space and time part it out.

Or you can source a donor car, for cheap that is for parts only or salvage title and swap out the motor and trans one crack (easier than just pulling motor).

I'm not on the mainland, but have a spare block and crank on the side, off an 01. Used the head for another car couple years back. Shipping would be crazy though.....

The repair will cost more than the car is worth. Normally that means it's time to junk the car. If you are a DIY guy, swapping in a used motor makes sense but, if you have to pay someone to do it, it's pointless. For the cost of fixing your IS, you could buy another one with 100K less miles on it. I bought mine for $5700 with 250K miles on it and it's been great. It's got another 100K in her.
