Exclamation Hello I'm new here

Hello my name is Bill,

I don't own a 1G IS300 but by good friend of mine wants one and since I'm the "car guy" of your group he wants me to help build one when he finally finds one with a manual trans. He wants the car to be an all around vehical. I don't know much about these cars so I'm wearing out the search button on here. lol My current "experiance" is with DSMs and garbage trucks.

About my DSM, Its a 97 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX and its praticly stock but have big plans for it. Incase you don't know about them the GSXs have all wheel drive and a turbo charged 4G63T, it was hard to find this car with a manual trans where I'm at. Plans are building a 98/99 block with the 2g head and power goals are 450 whp but that's down the road quite aways and plans can change.
I am kinda expecting a little flame me owning a DSM lol

Questions.

Is there any problem rust arias we should know about?
How tough is the manual transmission? (good places for built transmissions?)
Any problem arias? Once he gets it we will replace the timming belt, water pump and a few other things. (never found recalls)
Is there any product like DSMLink (ECMlink) for tuning, and other stuff?
Any thing you would recomend or stuff I should look for?
Recomended build entries or blogs I should fallow?
Chassie flex? Just anything I should know.

Sorry if anything is a FAQ I have yet to figure this site out lol

That's what I have been told and that's why I suggested it and he said hell yeah to it so here I am now doing reseach. He knows little about cars so I'm kinda his relyable source when it comes to this stuf, he wants to learn so its helping make the reseach more valuable for everyone.

Welcome to the group! The idea of the 2jz is great but there is a big difference in the turbo and non-turbo. The manual transmissions are not made very well and the gearing breaks down after being turboed and putting down about 350hp or more. From the get go look for a R154 tranny or V160/1. The V161 would be the best bet but they only put them in the later Supras not the earlier ones like a 93 or so. The trans alone is about $4000.

Good luck.

So its litterally like DSM manual trans, I figured before we put some real numbers down on getting a built trans like a dog box aor a dual sincro trans or something like that. But thank you for the transmission swap options, I will definanty look into that tonight. Now I'm curious how the rear end holds up. Another thing for the search button I guess.

We are wanting a 2-way diff so most likly aftermarket. I have been reserching engine builds and making good power would be kinda easy but expensive. Well doing it right is expensive. He wants 500 rhp but I think he just wants a higher whp goal than I have. The reason of a 2 way diff is he wants to drag, a bit of drifting, auto x, road race and road worthy so suspension setups are important for different racing. So I need to find good set of coilovers for it. Its not going to be easy to keep it driveable but it would be a fun car.

just buy a 2jzgte out of a supra with the v160/1 tanny and go from there. that would be inexpensive and it will hold 500hp on stock internals no problem

I thought it would hold the power just fine but I would still open it up just to check, when it comes down to engine internals I want to be careful.

Can't crack the stock ECU so tuning options are standalone or piggback. Do some searching and reading. Good luck!
