key locked up
#16
i bought a key from my.is. i thought it was an OEM key. I am still not sure cause of the way it looked/felt.
I heard that some ebay keys have steel in them and that locksmiths won't cut it. After reading that i took a magnet to it and sure enough it didn't stick. The locksmith did the same test and confirmed there was not steal in it before cutting it.
Found a local locksmith (specialty in locks/keys) to get it cut and the key works like a charm. Cost $10 for the key shell and $23 to get it cut.
it was cheaper then getting it from the sewell online site which was $75 or so for just the key shell and have it cut.
the back of this key looks nothing like the two i originally had. the plastic is also not as "smooth" and it looks/feels more textured. So i was suspicious if its an OEM key. but in any event the transponder fit just fine and key works on the door, ignition and trunk.

$10 ebay backup is better than no backup key at all
Got a link to the ebay seller?
That key actually doesn't look too bad..
There are lots of ebay sellers, I don't want to pick the wrong one and get something worse than yours...

no doubt they are good, when i bought my car i had one new lexus key, and an old one that was broken, but it had the transponder and all i did was buy a shell for $10 and get it cut for $30 replace the $3 battery in the transponder and for $43 i had a new (Ebay) lexus key but it works like a charm, works just as good as my genuine lexus key i have. and they both say lexus so im happy

This one is just the shell cover i think.

This one looks good, but the key is gold looking?
Maybe it is not steel like someone mentioned and maybe it will break?

I don't care which is cheapest since they're all like around $10 or less.
I just want a good one that's not going to break easily
Or should I just do eenie-meenie-miney-mo?

it is gold color, and not steel. but with some use it turns silver. my original lexus key is not steel either, but it is like a polished aluminum not gold. but that is the only difference i see is the color of the ebay key compared to OEM.

that is what i suspected, that it was not an OEM key.
Call around your area to see who can cut the key. took me a little bit in the DC metro to find a place that was willing to do it and had the ability to do it.
btw thanks for the link.. ill know where to go next time =)
Just realized you are from VA.. if you are in NOVA - the place i went to is called Baldinos. If you bring in your own key its only 22.50+tax to get it cut. just FYI if you ever need to get another one cut.

I took my key out near my local DMV to a place called Precision Locksmith. they can look the VIN up and cut the key or cut it based off the old key, i just gave them the old key and a few minutes later and $30 and a $3 transponder remote battery I was on my way with my new key. they did a great job.
