Sure hope he did a tranny swap and isnt sellin it like that without it..... awesome car. If the dude in the mirrored image on the paint is the owner, then it might not have gotten beaten to death.... (since he's kinda old lol)

That car was on .is for a little while and had no takers. I think he said he wanted to purchase a home so he had to get rid of it. The tranny is still the stock W55 but he did drop in a GTE short block or swap internals can’t remember which route he took. So the car is in need of a tranny swap and your golden, IMO? LOL, that makes it sound so cheap and easy to do. I talked to the original owner about it and he said the car was built by speed and sound in St.Louis.
Are you looking to possibly make the purchase?

The car is at small dealership. I am/was interested in purchasing it. The salesguy won't budge on 18,500. I actually told the salesguy I'll take it for 18,500 and he was going to call me back to get my info but never did. Regardless, it sounds like you guys are saying the stock tranny won't hold the power and if that's the case I won't even bother with it.
Thanks for the info.

Well.... here's the thing: It looks like a pretty solid ride, but you can never know how much abuse it received by its prior owner! That and if the prior driver was hard on it, you can darn well bet that the tranny is about to blow up (or will blow up in the near future). Another owner on .IS is running a similar turbo setup in a car that he uses to drift. Basically, he cryo-treated a stock w55 with a twin disk clutch setup and is pushing roughly 420+ horsepower. He's super rough on it around the track, and the transmission only made it about 6 total trips of about 2 hours each day... Thats how weak the stock tranny is.
So basically if you bought the car, you have 3 options you can go with:
r154 5-spd transmission from MKIII Supra's
+swaps very easily
+holds over 700-750 hp
+easy to find the transmission itself
+long gearing, can easily get up above 160-170 mph
+total parts and install cost is roughly $2000 ($500 for tranny)
-VERY sloppy gears with lots of play (we're talking 6 inches of side-to-side play in each gear)
-hard to source the individual parts you'll need in order to adapt the tranny to the motor (for some it has taken around 3-4 months)
v160/v161 Getrag 6-spd transmission from MKIV Supra's
+swaps out very easily
+power levels are easily above 1000 hp
+short gearing, but a 6-spd, you'll still get up to 160-170 easy.
+overall a stronger transmission
-VERY expensive, tranny is anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000.... plus install and parts
w58 Auto transmission w/ Valve-body/sprag/tranny cooler
+can handle around 400 hp
+maintains boost while shifting
+very cost effective
-complicated swap.... need to source a bunch of parts and it would be a pain in the a$$
-not really worth it as it cant handle over 500 hp without blowing
Good Luck!

Thanks for making my decision easier. Good luck to the next owner of this car.
Also, This car was on Ebay before and I was the highest bidder at 17,100 and the reserve was not met. The salesguy said they bought the car from another dealership and the prior owner traded it in for a Tahoe SS or something.
