MPG on IS300
I am pretty much set on getting an 02 IS300 manual, but now i am hearing all around that it has got one of the worst gas mileages around. Is this true? I drive a civic right now and i know you cant compare to its gas mileage. I just hope the gas mileage wont be the deciding factor in getting this car. Is the highest octane gas required?

It's 18 city and 23 hwy. Not geat, but not bad for inline 6.
I used to drive about 20,000 miles and I was filling up almost twice a week. Now I work from home and fill up every 2 weeks. It depeds on your commute.
Recommended gas is 91. I've put 89 and 87 in my car on certain occassions and it makes the car lose some "juice" at acceleration. Long term use I would strongly recommend 91 though.

If gas mileage is important to you and is a big factor of your decision making then I strongly suggest that you don't buy this car. It will eat gas like nobody's business. You could extend your mileage by driving more conservatively but what fun would that be?

This car is an absolute pig on gas around 60to 70 bucks to fill only premium fuel and it gets about 500-550Km to a tank. I had a civic before too and there not even in the same fuel economy class. I have to fill up 2-3 times a week!!!!! The civic was only once a week

The gas mileage on the IS300 is not the greatest...but then again it's geared to be a performance sports sedan.
The fuel injector rates and the gearing of the car do not have fuel economy in mind unfortunately. Having nearly 81k miles on my 30 month old 2004 IS300, i hardly worry about it.

...............and the few times I put in cheap or lower grade gas, I always got beat by other cars on the road. I remember each and every time (including a VW Bug Turbo).

The reason why the IS300's 2JZ-GE motor requires Premium is because of the high 10:5:1 Compression ratio. I would use lower octane on my IS300 if it didn't have such a high c/r. I would never downgrade the fuel octane requirement recommended by the factory. And for a good reason. The 2JZ-GE is more on the peformance side rather than fuel economy side. Knock sensor replacements for these motors aren't cheap. My IS occassionaly pings during a normal downshift when passing especially in the warmer climates w/the A/C on...this is with using 91 octane premium. I know for a fact if i downgrade, the ping will be more prolonged in different conditions. I'd rather not have my engine detonate and cause futher damage the motor down the road. 81k miles and running on my 2004, the car runs as strong as it did with only 5 miles on the ODO.
