Yep. The GS300 and IS both have 2JZ-GE engines.

Which generation are you talking about. Not all GS300's have the 2jz.

the 2000+ models? i'm new to lexus cars. i used to drive honda. never thought i'd buy an is300. so i don't know much about other lexus'

GS from 93-05 have used the 2JZ-GE. VVT-i was adapted to the 2nd Gen GS300 98-05. The new GS300 uses an all new 3GR-FSE 3.0L Dual VVT-i V6.

what different in setting the GS300 have that gives more power over the IS300? it'd be interesting if i can change the settings or add some new parts (aftermarket or stock) to the IS300 to gain some extra power.

Mainly ECU programming and exhaust layout.

It's pretty obvious you will add HP to any car w/any bolt on performance mod i.e exhaust, intake, header and etc.
